Short interview Farnham GCs Lottie Woad did recently for the Surrey Rookie Tour and shown at Surrey Ladies Golf Association AGM a week ago. Lottie won British Girls Open this year and has just gone to the Florida State Uni…and this is a nice little insight into the path taken and what is required of her at FSU by a young lass (she’s 19) aiming for the top in golf.

Lottie was recently awarded both Honorary Membership of Surrey Ladies Golf Association and it’s Molly Gourlay trophy for outstanding achievement. I’ll add that Lottie mentions the final comp of her season to be played when the interview was done, the Landfall Tradition…and given her season it’s not surprising perhaps that she finished 4th out of 96…she’ll probably be happy enough with 4th ?

The joy of a bright sunny day of winter golf. Course was frozen on Saturday, doubt the temperature got above zero, but what a fun round.

Some crazy bounces, but you just have to play the conditions and not worry about the score v par. Impossible to play a high shot into the green, on the flip side I hit a couple of 280+ yard drives

We played skins and it was very entertaining.

I found it funny as well, but the worst bit for me was trying to get a tee in the ground. Skied a couple of tee shots with 5 wood and hybrid when I hadn't managed to get the tee in low enough and given up, haha. Eventually I had to just chuck it on the ground for anything other than driver.

I’ll add that this lass in the interview demonstrate some useful insight for one so young (she’s still 18 I think) about things that we could all benefit from, and guidance for dads with keen young golfers, as well as the life of a student golfer at a US college. Worth a watch if you’ve got 12mins to spare.

When I played two weeks ago the ground was frozen solid and neither tee mats nor ground would take a peg. When I got home I was straight in the garage and after 10 minutes ferreting around I located an ancient set of tees identical to those pictured.
Last Tuesday when I played while others struggled with their pink castle tees I just through my ancient rubber ones down on the floor and off I went. Perfect.

Only trouble is they never make one low enough for the height I would want for irons. Even the smallest one is like over a cm high.

First round with my wife tomorrow since the little man arrived almost a year ago! Really looking forward to some time on the course together!

That this year I was able to take advantage of my new circumstances to play, in a year, more courses than in any year of the last 35. But with work and children no longer constraints…I had the time. Still ‘only’ 12, but hey…these included Hayling, Hankley, Hollinwell and North Hants. Not a bad bunch of Hs.

And I reflect with gratitude and thanks on the good fortune that has enabled me to do that, and to look forward to more such days this coming year…so many being very much less fortunate than I.
