This autumn we will have a biennial competition called the Ryder Cup between European and American golfers.

There are 12 players on each team, so was thinking at who might make the European selection :

1. McIlroy
2. Fleetwood
3. Hatton
4. Åberg
5. Lowry
6. Big Shot Bob
7. Straka

These are the absolute certainties.

An interesting case is :
8. Hovland.
Badly needs a good summer, and amazing to think he mightnt make the team. I think he will sneak it.

Likely :
9. Detry - I see him making it
10. Rose - one last tour of duty. Last time looked like the last time. But I think another last time is still in him this last time.

11, 12 is a real dogfight between :
Pavon. Need several more good results before selection day
R Hojgaard. Needs a good showing in a major. See him just missing out
Rai. Being a 3 day event will count against him. Nobody wants to wait around until Monday for him to hit a putt
Rahm. Is he still playing golf ? Or retired ? Or ?
Canter. Is he of the level ? Another man who could benefit from a top 5 push in a major
Jaeger. A long shot, but not out of it.

Pavon + ??? for me, but there is some ground to cover yet.

Europes chances hang on the form at the time of three who need to show up : can Hovland get back in gear, has Rose really one last shot, does Detry sustain.

Have you just made this so someone can point out that Rahm is obvious cert for the team and then you can make some glib remarks about LIV? I'll be that guy if you want.

Rahm will obviously be in the team.
No. Honestly, I did it, and then realised I had missed him out completely. So added him like that. Worrying if he doesnt show some form in the four tournaments between here and there, but he will be in regardless.

You forgetting Fitzpatrick? ...
I reckon either or both Hojgaard will get in.
Paul Waring could be in with a shout tho not sure he will get enough points.. Can't see him being a pick if he doesn't..

I didnt. His formed has totally dropped of, and for a long while now. For longer, and from lower anyway, than Hovland. One wounded bird on the team is enough, and that will be Victor. There are both enough experienced big guns, and players winning and climbing the rankings staking valid claims for a place, that he wouldnt deserve a pick. Of course, its 6 months away and he might get it back. But a lot to do if so.

Noren, and outsider for 12 man, but very unlikely. Garcia no chance whatsoever.

If Garcia continues his form, and is eligible, he'll have every chance - thought you'd agree with your "highly skilled golfers of this time" title..

Look at his record, it speaks for itself - and in the environment of Bethpage his experience would definitely come into the selection process. If you think Rose is worthy, Garcia definitely is. (y)

In previous years this page has been quite informative: https://www.rydercup.com/eu-rankings

Still got four majors to go of course, but it's suggesting the current top six are McIlroy, Hatton, R.Hojgaard, Aberg, Lowry and Detry. Bit of a mixed bag after that though. Wallace is surprisingly high, wouldn't mind him getting in. Fleetwood is weirdly down in 12th but I'm sure he'll put in a better major showing than the others. Rahm is 26th but I'd suggest he's guaranteed a captain's pick regardless as you'd be stupid not to.

Alex Fitzpatrick is actually a long way above Matt. Hovland at 104, two places below Padraig Harrington. 😯 Noren is 120. Garcia isn't in the list at all.

Hovland's turn of form is crazy, considering how good he was in the last RC, but if he doesn't top 10 at least one of the majors this year, there isn't much reason to take him.

Think looking at the current players around then the ones we know will go are

Rory
Fleetwood
Abery
Lowry
R Hojgaard

Then I think Hatton will prob get enough points to qualify

Then it’s down to the picks

McIntyre
Strakka

Those two unless something dramatic happens will get in

Then it’s all down to form for

Rahm
Canter
N Hojgaard
Wallace
Parry
Rose
Hovland

Think Donald is going to be very heavy on experience for the away fixture

Rose I see going

We are so far away from this being relevant, it's barely worth considering. The whole season is ahead, all sorts could happen between now and then.

I like a bit of speculation but this is stretching it.

Yep - we have seen plenty of times how form is massive going into the RC

Some peak too early and get in too early and then bomb because the form has gone

True. Although might be fun if we all predict the team of 12 before any majors have happened, then check back in September and see who got the most right. 😛
