Bandits a 3 o clock.

We know there are mutterings about HID and to be honest it's wearing a bit thin. First comp of the season he was cut from 24.8 to 21.6, hit buffer on next two and after last Saturdays comp was cut from 21.6 to 19.5. He was then given a two shot ESR and is now off 17.5. He's played every comp over winter when they were all non q and so far this year has entered all the comps, four in total. Could understand the moaning if he'd won everything over winter and to date....

I don't think anyone would think that was okay, but I'm guessing for the match to go ahead the guy must have played enough qualifiers in the previous year to keep his handicap active.

And I know Patrick plays a lot of qualifiers to keep his handicap up to date, but eight or nine-under net (if that's what it was) was still a hell of a score in its own right

Keeping your handicap active doesn't excuse you from being a bandit imo. This guy admitted he didn't play enough comps yet still entered the matchplay.

He clearly knew there was a very, very good chance he was going to play well under his handicap. If people can accept that then fair enough but I wouldn't be too impressed if it was against me.

Golfer who loses matchplay cries foul shocker!

Wonder what the thread would have said if you had won and been 3 under par for a 6 h/capper?

The big difference is he plays in regular qualifying comps so has given his handicap a chance to be as accurate as possible.

This other guy cant find time to play qualifiers but can find time to play matchplay events?

Surprised at the amount of people on here that think that is ok

But isnt he a relatively new member so how many events has he been able to get into ?

but i am a bit confused as he says he plays in loads of comps but mainly scrambles ? How many scrambles are playing in Nairn ? We have two a year. He must been playing some qualifiers ? How many ? What was the players score ?

Lots of little snippets of info but not the whole picture

Its against the spirit to only play the 3 qualifiers each year to keep handicap active then play loads of matchplay - but again i have never witnessed it at our place.

I've never understood bandits. My pride comes from shooting the lowest GROSS score possible! Off a 16 handicap, I have never yet come that close to breaking gross 80. Been working hard at my game this year, and can't wait til it (hopefully) happens. I will consider that (and getting a lower handicap) an achievement, not beating people in competition because of a false handicap.

Agreed, is the right attitude

No mention of him being new I don't think. He had the same handicap for 13 years was mentioned I think.

There may be a few other circumstances we don't know about but the picture that has been painted isn't a good one! :D

Posts 27 i think says he is relatively new -

Yes the pictured painted from the little bits of snippets isnt a good one

But i think the picture in this case is a little one sided and possibly one a bit bitter after being beaten

But within the rules....that's not his fault...
Look, they both played well, both shot well under handicap and someone won.
If Patrick had come on and said he had to shoot 3 under gross to win a match we'd all be saying "well played, good scoring"
Someone else had a better day...

To be fair it's another reason I went off serious competitive golf a number of years ago.
It's well documented on here that I don't like Matchplay...

I don't get this whole "I don't want to play in case I'm called a bandit" nonsense. I really don't. Just play, if you score well and someone genuinely calls you a bandit just laugh at them. It really is that simple. Personally I'd take it a step further and turn up in a fake tache and sombrero and ask what time I was teeing off! Are people's minds so fragile that they can't take someone calling them a name? It's a game! Just play, if you score well great, if you don't, try to next time. Really couldn't care less if anyone called me a bandit, as I said, I just laugh. It's your pastime, enjoy it.

Seems very harsh, an improving golfer playing in every comp and handicap coming down. Ignore the barbs and keep it up!

If I was him I would apologise for practising the game he loves, trying to improve and playing as and when he can in competitions. Apologise that he has only been cut 7.3 shots in 4 comps so far this playing season and that he will try his hardest to get the cuts into double figures asap!!!!

One observation, some clubs dont help themselves by automatically making all winter comps non qualifying imo, clubs should be trying to do everything they can to have qualifying comps all through the year when weather permits

Interestingly there seems to be the opposite trend having started at our place, with a few people wanting "vanity" handicaps and asking to be cut by the hcap secretary, even though the are playing comps and not able to reduce it that way!

Had that at our place also mate

Had a number asking for reductions - i checked their history and only one person had got anywhere near the handicap that was asked and in my opinion only one should have got the redutction but was told to give them all the reductions.

I am monitoring results for those players and the results are exactly what i expected and will see them back to the handicap they were before the request. I will certainly be fighting a lot stronger on handicap decreases next year

Ah we've imported the disease have we lol :)

Slight issue we have is our hcap secretary still thinks its 1998 and doesnt need asking twice to slash someones hcap

Ive had loads of that myself in the past. You cant do anything more than play every single qualifier! :D

That's what he's doing on both counts:) I think a lot of it is sour grapes as he's qualified for the Lombard Pro Am and his gross scores have been better than players off loads less;)

That's what really gets my back up. Surely the clubs could just have the shortened winter course measured and SSS measured etc and then play comps whenever the course is playable?

Same with us in terms of the committee - thankfully it will be different next year - competitions and handicaps most certainly.

If I was h/cap sec and someone came to me asking for a cut, I would oblige no problems. Nothing silly mind, just one or two shots off.
At the end of the day, if the player cant play to it, it's nobody elses fault but his own and nobody else gets hurt.

Makes sense to me. If not that then surely must be a workable system that performance over winter is taken into account. If clubs insist on having a period of no adjustment maybe scores over that period should be reviewed at the start of the "qualifying" season and some adjustments made for those who consistently played well or won comps

We're fortunate if the course is fully playable then we have qual comps all year round (regardless of pick and place etc) and our white tees stay out all year round

Thats pretty much whats happening Bob, just doesnt make any sense to me really
