Played in a club knockout last night against a 12 handicapper so giving away 6 shots , not that bad… but you know when you are in for a tough match when they then sailed the ball 50 yards past you on the tee, flick a wedge to 5 feet and sink the put for a birdie on the first hole. He sank puts all over the place and I couldn’t see any weakness in his game.

Asked him if he played many comps loads he said … Texas scrambles mostly. 3 under gross and lost:( i shudder to think how low his score was.

got beaten by a better player, no doubt..would have been more of a game if he had given my the shots;)

You get those at every club, there are certainly some at ours who put in the minimum number of cards to qualify for the knockouts and then do rather well.

We have a guy at our club who targets our Ryder Cup (matchplay knockout) every year and plays (badly) just about enough comps to keep his handicap active. Other than that he just plays in the roll ups. He has won it for the last 2 years playing off 20 and generally plays to 11-12 in this comp.

He could of had a good day, it happens sometimes, especially if he's a 12 hcp and coming down? He reminds me of someone I know ;) It's possible for a 12 hcp to shot a gross 74 and 76 in the space of 4/5 weeks? :)

True, but unlikely if you have had the same handicap for the last 13 years and open admit you don't play enough comps

I play off 12, I think that level is close to being good on the good days. I can certainly play much better and hit the ball like a lower handicapper, for me it's consistency. I hear quite a lot I'm a better player, so does my mate who's also off 12, the reality is we are 12 handicappers for a reason.
There's no doubt though people do protect their handicaps, i know of a pair who play in the minimum 3 comps a year throw in no returns or bad rounds and clean up on the pairs open circuit. No other word for it but cheating.

What do the club say about it when you complain.

is the correct question

although complain is maybe a little harsh. observations such as 'you may be interested to know' and, definitely the strongest in such situations, would be 'I do hope he doesn't play outside the club with that handicap - seriously bad reflection on the club if he does'

I'm also always amazed that such individuals are welcomed into 'roll-ups'; we have had a couple of instances where they have been politely advised that they are welcome to play if they sign in for a supplemental card first!

12 shots better is close to being a good day? doesn't seem right that!

We have a guy who is desperate to join our Sunday roll-up but is being refused entry until he starts to play regularly in competitions and not just turn up for board comps. So far this year he has played in all the individual and pairs board comps and only one normal comp round, the pattern was the same last year and people are getting a little fed up with it as he is usually close to the top.

Sounds like he wasn't the only bandit involved in that particular match :o

Browsing medal results at local clubs (sad, I know) I noticed a 20 capper was nett 59 at one of them. I wonder if he got a wee cut. :) Best of luck to the guy, he quite possibly played an absolute blinder and is improving rapidly. I'm willing to wager several eyebrows crept up several foreheads when it happened though.

Pro's shoot the odd 59 and low 60's which is a fair bit below their average. Don't see why an amateur gets a load of grief if they do it once in a while, as long as they aren't doing it often and then keeping an artificially high handicap in between.

What annoys me is people saying they don't have time or get to play in enough comps yet they still find time to enter the matchplay comps?

What is that all about?

Im getting moaned at by my pp as im off 16 and havent shot over +12 since February. However I'm not a natural golfer and if i dont practice my game goes south fast. I have my first child arriving in 4 weeks so i can say goodbye to my practice. as a result i have stoped playing comps and once my daughter is born i will be handing in a fair few supplementary cards. Last thing i want is to get a silly cut and never play to my handicap until the little bugger goes to school

However you want to justify that, you're protecting your handicap. Pure banditry! Sorry.

I've never understood bandits. My pride comes from shooting the lowest GROSS score possible! Off a 16 handicap, I have never yet come that close to breaking gross 80. Been working hard at my game this year, and can't wait til it (hopefully) happens. I will consider that (and getting a lower handicap) an achievement, not beating people in competition because of a false handicap.
