Bandits a 3 o clock.

Not much you can do about it unfortunately. I enjoy playing in competitions such as Northern Matchplay, Nike Matchplay & League to Dubai and these are littered with these sorts of players. They all have, what in the eyes of CONGU, is a perfectly legitimate handicap. If any changes are to be made, it needs to be made at CONGU level rather than club level.

I once played a 6 handicapper in the club singles (I was off 20) and beat him on the 12th. He counted back and said I'd played better than he did - gross (although he did give me a couple of pretty generous concessions). I could've forgiven that guy for thinking I was a bandit - and maybe he did! - but as anyone who's seen me play regularly will attest, that really was the round of my life. I don't have a handicap any more but if I did I'm certain it would be higher than 20 now. Due to lack of practice (and lack of talent) I'm sure I'm a worse player now than I was then.

Surely a handicap committee can take into account if a person is winning matchplay, pairs comps and still act accordingly, if excessive.

A relatively new member that, as far a im aware hasn't won anything yet. so little the HC can do as such.

Said he's going to play in a stableford in a couple of weeks. wait with interest;)

Not so. CONGU gives handicap committees adequate powers to deal with such players, but, unfortunately, many do not use them.

Would work for people who clean up in club pairs & matchplay etc, but doesn't help with opens. If a golfer is doing all his/her winning elsewhere and getting trips paid for left right n centre, what do the club care if they are paying their fees and rockin up for 3 comps a year...

Aarrghhh! Another bandit thread...

Golfers are inconsistent, mostly (and I repeat, mostly) not intentionally so...

Rory shot 63 on Thurs and 78 today - what handicap would you give him on that basis?

Spot On

It always makes me smile when a low handicapper shoots a low round it's all well done and pats on the back in the club house. A high handicapper shoots a good round an he or she is a bandit!!!! People need to take golf for what it is and that's inconsistent , every dog has its day.

Normally I'd agree Jezz but do you not think there is something a little wrong with people playing the minimum amount of qualifiers to get into knockouts\board events and then, despite playing every week, doing nothing to keep their handicap accurate?

arghhhhh this whole thread is the main reason I haven't upgraded my season ticket to membership status. My unofficial gshake hcap is 16, I have periods where I play mid - low 80's / high 80's, low 90's, mid 90's and occasionally ton up. My fear is I play mid 90's first month and then find form and get slapped the tag of a bandit.

I know it will all level out nicely in the end and the controls are in place by committees etc but I know that at my level an 15 shot swing is not unusual for me. I play the sport because I love the honesty and the level playing field the handicap system produces.

Am I being daft for not upgrading for this reason? I usually play on my own and only record rounds when I have a pp, also i was a guest at a society recently (my 1st ever real "comp") and I won, 38pts on countback, I was completely over the moon really proud moment but have heard since one guy was doing all he could to get me dq'd pouring over my scorecard and grilling my pp as I was jonny come lately and walked away with the title. If i'd have known this at the time I'd have politely declined the trophy at the prize giving as it really took the shine off it literally to hear there was one divvy putting a big black cloud over it.

I get to play with the same group again in sep in a ryder cup style weekender I hope he's on the other team and I stuff him

or put another way, it's not the low score that makes someone a bandit!

Yes there is something distinctly unsavoury about that, but personally, I've never experienced that kind of thing at any of the clubs i've been a member of.

And going back to the OP, I can't remember what Patrick's h'cap is but think it may have been wiser to leave the bit about being 3-under gross himself out...

Think he plays off about 5 or 6 - so either 9 or 8 under handicap !!

The big difference is he plays in regular qualifying comps so has given his handicap a chance to be as accurate as possible.

This other guy cant find time to play qualifiers but can find time to play matchplay events?

Surprised at the amount of people on here that think that is ok

I don't think anyone would think that was okay, but I'm guessing for the match to go ahead the guy must have played enough qualifiers in the previous year to keep his handicap active.

And I know Patrick plays a lot of qualifiers to keep his handicap up to date, but eight or nine-under net (if that's what it was) was still a hell of a score in its own right
