YouTubers.

I think they are the freebies. I think Liam is in the position that his content is time consuming but that it's his main source of income. Most of the other high profile youtubers are pga pros and can offer lessons at premium prices because of their profile. I like the guy and like the channel but unfortunately not enough to pay him for it. I can't see him lasting long with his current set up unless he's already converted a sizable number to his new club.

I agree, If the youtube game is not paying enough then he needs to find another source of income or diversify. Perhaps looking to remove some staff and reign it back a bit.

I haven't really watched a golfmates video for a long time as they are all the same, Play X holes and have what appears to be fake laughs and jokes that have been repeated over and over.

Same here. Used to enjoy them on occasions but then every video became the same - and they would always have some sort of painfully choreographed gag involved somewhere. Something they were trying to play as 'off the cuff' but was very obviously pre-planned. Their acting was never good enough to pull it off. Now I think there's plenty out there who do the 'golf & banter' format better - Golf Life and ForeBros for example.

I saw about 3 mins of one video by them and that was enough for me to never watch them again 😂

I enjoy Forebros as their content is quite fun to watch. Granted Dec sometimes grates on me. Ronan carries the show there in my opinion.

Golf Life I flick in and out of. Some of the stuff I enjoy. Other stuff not so much. Depends how much cockney rhyming slang Tubes tries as I find it a bit much sometimes.

Just watched this, and probably one of the best YouTube golf vids I've ever watched. Finch and Iona make a great pair, and some fantastic golf on show as well.

9 hole match between Iona Stephen and McGinley. Must admit to not being the esteemed Mcginley's greatest fan. I tried to view his contribution with the greatest impartiality. Is he smug and patronising or is it just me?

Just watched this.

I'm not a big fan of his, but he seemed fine with me on that video- early on he said he was going to show her how to play competitive matchplay by getting into the heads of his opponents, which is why he may have seen a bit smug/patronising maybe?

Iona tried a bit of it back at him too after his advice, but wasn't as successful as he just shrugged it off.

She seemed to appreciate what he told her, enjoyed the 9 holes, and he showed her that he can still play golf.

The Ryder Cup chats were pretty interesting.

The amount of people getting triggered by the McGinley and Iona video is hilarious. I thought it was a great bit of content. McGinley isn’t patronising or condescending, he’s just explaining the dynamics of match play to Iona and how to get a competitive edge during the match and each shot. You can see Iona trying to take it all on board which is why she try’s some of it back, albeit unsuccessfully. If you put any personal bias to the side there was some great insights in there and what to do in different situations. I thought it was a great video personally but then again I’m maybe one of the few who doesn’t mind McGinley in the first place. At the very least he showed he’s still got a serious game in there and knows how to play golf.

I enjoyed it too and did laugh when Iona took a drop after hitting into the water and McGinley pulled her as it was a bus ride away from where it should have been.

It may be YouTube, but he played to win.

A lot of the comments on the video were negative towards PM, saying he was obnoxious and condescending. I’m not his biggest fan purely based on his commentary, but I didn’t think he was bad in the video. It was filmed for the Ryder cup so the premise was definitely to show how matchplay works, tactics, how to compete etc.

If it had been a normal vlog on Iona’s channel then I think it would’ve been totally different.

How long is the video, as I am afraid I likely haven’t the time to watch it….So, I’d really appreciate if someone could bullet point summarise what tips were given re:dynamics of getting the competitive edge in matchplay golf

If it was anything other than the three points below it will just have been the usual PM self indulgent waffle.

1. Hit better shots than your opponent.

2. Concentrate on playing your own game.

3. See point 1.

I found the following one interesting: when your opponent is in a better position, don’t push to better them but play safe and make them work for that birdie/par to win a hole.

Just watched it myself. Have to admit didn’t find PM being self indulgent at all.

He gave her sound advice, was quite personable and showed he still has a good game.

I thought it was a great watch and the banter between them made it more so.
I like McGinley and accept he knows a heck of a lot more than I ever will about the game.
Iona always asks some great questions and the ones about the Ryder Cup and Captaincy etc. we're interesting.
I thought he was very fair to Iona during the game with good tips and advice and complementing her good shots, which I didn't find patronising at all.
I have to say that I like Iona as well.🤩

It helps that she is a genuinely nice person as well, also unexpectedly funny.
