YouTubers.

is anyone following Rick Shiels “teasers”? Any guesses on what the announcement is going to be?

Judging by shots and mentions of night, he’s moving to Dubai 🙃
I was thinking he may be moving to America, not Dubai. But then he has a couple of young kids so not sure the move would be great for them. Unless his wife has kicked him out.

I imagine it'll be some anti-climax, like another Golfbidder match with Pete, or a new series entitled 'Break 79'.

I dont really follow Shiels any more, but he looks a bit in danger of ending up his own bewmholey and there isnt any substance left at all, and all is just tease. It was the same with his review channel. More talk about the channel than delivery. I think he lost perspective with his position as golf's number one youtuber in a way, and there is so much competition now that he has nothing unique, others are arguably better in different fields, and all that is left is his bigness.

I’m pretty sure it’ll be an anti climax, self congratulatory type thing. I’ve moved to the USA - who gives a flying flip. Still can’t get my head around grown adults buying his merchandise.

Something I’ve read elsewhere is that it might be some kind of creator league type thing, Peter finch is also due to make an announcement soon apparently. That would be good, yes, but I’m really not sure why there’s a need for the social media logo being changed to all black, and the build up to the announcement as if it’s the final Star Wars film.

The modern world isn’t for me, I’m only 47!!

Yes, the merchandise was another one. Thinking he is a brand, not 'just' a youtuber. Not that there is anything wrong with that fundamentally. The demand is clearly there. But there is nothing inherently special about any of his content now.

Has it ever been special? It was entertaining, sure, but not more special than Crossfield (especially when he was with Lockey/Bazza/Rory) and Finch.

YT golf now is a totally different beast though... Good Good came in just few years ago and now are sponsoring tour players(!), Grant appeared on Good Good when they were already doing well, but now he's arguably bigger than them as partnering with Phil... Let's see what he's announcement is and if it can match any of the hype :)

I must admit, those videos were superb entertainment.

Not special really, but in a much less crowded marketplace, he had a role. But it was more a case of being in early, and offering a bit of everything, than being better. He offered a bit of reviews, instruction, matches, tech, travel. Crossfield similar, but a bit more edgy. They were both building the genre and deserve credit for that. Now there are plenty of options in each area, and some in niche specialisms, like Stacked Golf or Bebetter golf. And on the mainstream content, I dont think there is any area where there arent now several options that are superior to Shiels. Crossfield has a bit more characted to him but Marmite component as well. Shiels various one off or repeated link ups with other tubers only has so much mileage in it too, and starts to make them all a little incestuous and out of real ideas rather than still innovating.

I've heard the news is Rick has signed to LIV......

Obviously not as a player but as some form of content creator. That said judging by a few LIV players he might well do a job for one team

I think some of the YouTubers have realised how investing in good production works.

Peter Finch does this very well to his credit. Iona Stephen has Titleist behind her and demonstrates this point well.

The amount of investment required to produce quality stuff is considerable, but taking account of the income they can generate, it surprises me on how poor many are.

Looking how the golfers that go to LIV seem confined to oblivion, such a move could be the end of Shiels completely. Lucrative no doubt. But his profile would tank.

Like the golfers, I think he's probably been offered silly money if this is the case.

His YT page will always make money, even if his viewership dips.

Easy decision for me :ROFLMAO:

I miss Crossfield's course vlogs with Lockey and Rory et al. I get it that Mark C is a bit Marmite but I liked his videos. He seems to only do club reviews and coaching vids now - neither of which I'm interested in.

I enjoy his podcast with Greg Chalmers and Lou Stagner, they have a good bit of banter and they average around 20-30 minutes so not too long. Plus they were one of the few that seemed to carry on through Christmas and new year while others all took a break. You're right about his YouTube content though, it seems to have dried up a bit.

Totally agree, used to enjoy them, nice seeing different courses, more mickey taking (although can understand why some don’t like it) and not overly produced/slick production.

He never seemed to confirm why he’d moved away from doing them, they were really popular and he’s always getting messages saying bring back the vlogs! Maybe he saw the way that golf YouTube was heading and didn’t feel like he could or wanted to keep up. Shame.
