you notice your game is slipping down the slippery slope of AGE?

Will you keep playing when:

you are not hitting the ball as far as you used to?

you are not getting to a par 4 in two?

you can't drive the ball over 200yds?

your handicap starts to go up at a hell of a rate of knots?

Will you chuck it when your realise that you are no longer battling to get better but trying to maintain what you have already got?

I am not sure how I will deal with loss of distance, consistancy or even joint movement so I would like your thoughts.

Will you go out at the top like Borg or keep plugging away with no self respect like Tony Jacklin?

Got to keep going man.
What else you going to do? Sit in the hoose dribbling soup down yourself?
After years of being held up by old guys, it'll be our turn to torment the life out of the young team behind us.

After the sadness of yesterday (see my putting into perspective post if you are confused) I intend to thrash it about for as long as physically possible.

Obviously I'd like to play with a modicum of skill as age advances but as my handicap goes up the harder I will be to beat. Never get drawn against a vet in a summer matchplay comp. More often than not you will be giving shots and they will just trundle it down the middle, trundle it towards the green, chip on and 2 putt. Makes it very hard to play against when you are giving 10 or so shots

you are not getting to a par 4 in two? Very rarely do now!

you can't drive the ball over 200yds? Yep, I struggle with that one

your handicap starts to go up at a hell of a rate of knots? Been 25 since last summer, hope to improve on this one this year

Will you chuck it when your realise that you are no longer battling to get better but trying to maintain what you have already got? Nope, at the end of the day, it's a game

Ah! Those were the days....

I'm joining in with the Vets for some matches this year. From what I have seen with a couple of guys I already know, I'm not expecting any silverware. Both are well over 70 and can't hit the ball more than 150 yds on a good day. They are straight, never loose a ball, and have a short game to die for. One of them rarely carries more than 5 clubs - he doesn't need to. Tee driver. Fairway driver. Fairway driver or mid/short iron. Putt! Ba3tard.

What I'm basically saying is that golf is an excellent excuse for getting out, having a walk, enjoying good company and a beer after. I'll keep going as long as I am physically/mentally able so to do - even if I eventually have to trade in my electric trolly for a ride on cart.

I will always try to be a competitive player even when my handicap drifts. After all, that is what the handicap system is designed to do, isn't it?

I'm only 26 just now so its hard to imagine, but surely life starts at 55 in golf :D
Thanks for that nutcase. I'm only two years away from the age when golf starts (according to you). I did, however, manage a 37 on our back nine (3,300 yards) yesterday. Only got nine in because the course was frozen early in the morning and starts were delayed. Not bad for a grey-haired old f*****. BTW, are you a Celtic supporter?

All these apply to me! Am I giving up?......no way!
Going for lessons and getting serious, otherwise I won't be able to enjoy getting worse when I retire, because I'll be so crap before then unless I fix it up now.

We have an Irish guy at our club who is about 78, still passionate about golf and loves to help newbies like me. Plays two or three times a week, and much as leftie describes. I would love to hit as straight as he does, any club, any lie. He's not a slow player either.
I can't see any reason to stop until you are actually incapable of holding a club. Jacklin's mistake was still trying to compete with the big boys instead of competing at a his new level.

Already had to give up one sport due to age and injury (rugby) and have no plans on doing that again. Hope to be playing golf for the rest of my days and hope to make up any loss in distance with increased accuracy. If not, who cares, I enjoyed golf when I started out and was not very good so hope to be able to enjoy the game in 40 years time when I am still equally bad.

I voted for play on as we are not professionals, our financal futures are not dependant on being at the top of our golf games, I know a few fellas who were single digit golfers years ago, their age or condition has hindered this a fair bit and now play of 12+ handicaps and while they do justify the higher handicaps you can still see how they were better at one stage through the little things be it chipping, putting or their rescue shots.

My dad is 75, and plays off 21 twice a week. Got an electric trolley, but that is his only concession to age. We're off to Florida in March for two weeks golfing holiday where we will play 18 every day (in a cart though).

He belongs to two swindles of like minded fools, and has a great laugh with his mates. Golf is still the highlight of his week.

Being 38 i play with some old guys in their mid 60s and if i have half their energy and enthusiasm at that age then bring it on and they can bury me on the 18th. :D

Golf is for life not just Christmas! :D

Seriously though I'm looking forward to the day when I'm retired, nowhere near as good as I might become(can but dream), spend every other day at the course in good company, playing £2 front/back/overall and 2s, then sitting in the clubhouse with my soup, casting a critical eye over the young upstarts who 'dont know how lucky they have it'!

It's like being a millionaire and married; there till death!
