One of the reasons I joined another club was the Saturday and Sunday “Sweeps”. Allocated the same 6 tee bookings each week and pretty much a closed shop (24 play in each every week) and at this time of year with daylight being squeezed it makes getting times incredibly difficult. I was on BRS bang on 7pm last Sunday to look at this Sunday and within 20 seconds the first tee was 1230. No good for me.

But the sweeps have their times regardless. Was enough to make me join elsewhere.
They don't let anyone else play with them? Sounds like a society made up of members

So…winter Saturday rollup starting this coming Saturday. And new requirement from the club is that it loses its eight allocated tee times from 11am, and it has to book tee times a week in advance along with all other members.

OK that’s what we have done. This week 32 members wishing to play and we booked eight tee times from 10:30am. Well that’s the rollup’s historic 1st tee time before club shoved it out to 11am. Indeed there was a strong push from some in the rollup that we book tee times from 9am or 9:30am…but the majority were against playing games - we stayed on the high ground.

So those who complained to the club about the rollup and it being difficult to get an am time in the winter - well be careful what you wish for.
There we have it in a nutshell, roll ups are entitled.

Is this a clique or can anyone play?

It is no more than members trying to sort things out so that any member can join with and get to know other members for golf and fellowship. That many who play in it are either new members or tend not have a relatively fixed set of two or three mates with whom they could book in as a three or four ball has already been pointed out by @Swango1980 as a huge benefit of a rollup. And as already noted…this summer 67 members have played in the Saturday one. That does not suggest an exclusive, entitled elite.

And as pointed out, the rollup has acceded to every demand placed upon it by the club, demands based upon what? The club has not provided any evidence to back up the strength of feeling they say that there is. None whatsoever. No matter…we have decided to make the best out of the situation imposed upon us and we will look to book the tee times that best suit the majority of us - just exactly the same as any member looking to book a tee time.

People have been calling out the tone of your previous post. Can you not see that. 🤣

Approx how many members do you lose and gain over a year?

I wonder how many people complained about the roll up? Presumably more than 67 members were against it?

So the club blocks off 12 weekend tee times for a closed group of 24 players. That is not right at all.
If other groups approached the club, would they also get their own tee times?
It absolutely isn’t right and the main reason I joined elsewhere.
2nd club has a sweep on a Sunday with prebooked tees but from what I can see it’s easy to put your name down.

Although its more accurately 38 players as only a few from Saturday play in the Sunday and for the most part they are two separate groups.

Ah, apologies. I misread your post and thought you joined that club to get into that clique. 🤣

Is this a Fife club? Care to name it? 😃

Just like so many other things in life, no real "right" answer....even though people will insist there is. In the case of rollups, one side is willing to make compromises....there other side only wants things their way. There is no reason why a club can't make adjustments to make both sides as happy as possible.

You took the "tone" of his comment in one way....I took it in another way and wasn't looking for a reason for it to be as negative as you obviously view it (others as well).. Neither view is wrong, but I tried to look at it both ways and did my best not to put any bias to the comments.

This kind of thing came up at times when I was teaching. I occasionally got a parent in who was mad at me because I said xxxxxx to their kid and they didn't like it. In almost all cases I would try to calm things down and point out that maybe I could have said things better...but what I was meaning was this xxxxxx. I made a comment that could be taken either way....they had taken it in a way it was not meant. Once they thought about that it usually solved the problem. Maybe if I had been more careful about what I had said the problem wouldn't have occurred at all....but thinking about everything I'm about to say ahead of time and trying to judge whether someone will take it in the worst possible direction is something I don't have the skills to do.

Normally I find you one of the more grounded and rounded members of this forum.

But some of your language here does you no favours.

Demands and impositions? Behave yourself. You are that deeply involved with these roll ups - you can't see the wood for the trees. The club have simply just put your group on an equal footing with all the other members with weekend playing rights. Sounds fair to me.

And it doesn't necessarily need more than 67 people to take issue. Maybe the club took the view that they run a bigger risk of losing more people from the unhappy minority (if indeed that is what they are) than they do from your group? Or maybe because they have received complaints they have reviewed the situation and are implementing a more equitable playing field for all?

So my answer to the original question asked - in your case is "entitled".

If my language sounds entitled that is unfortunate as I am simply trying to reflect the feelings of many, but not all, of those who are regulars in the rollup.

Personally I understand why the club may have to have done this, and ‘imposed’ is the correct word for what has been done even though the club maintains that it has consulted with representatives of the rollup. I oppose some of what some rollup ‘hardliners’ have said and might wish to do in protest…I am a club member and what I as an individual wants is neither here nor there in the greater scheme of things - we elect committees to make decisions for us all - for the wider good of the membership.

My gripe, for as much as I have one, is over the lack of transparency around the complainants, plus the fact that the club has used, and sold to prospective members, that the Saturday rollup is a great means for new members becoming integrated, and to that end it has been very successful. Now, because of complaints of which numbers and nature we know almost nothing of, the wishes of a large group of committed and proud club members and how the club espoused the rollup are, it seems, rather ignored or largely forgotten. The action of the club, and suspicions around the motives for it, has created a rift in the membership - and for me that is very disappointing.

For me, things seem to be getting strangely personal in here. I appreciate that some people don't like roll ups, and have somehow reacted quite sensitively to the context of what SILH has said. Telling him to behave himself, implying they are not happy with his tone, etc. No idea why it was necessary for people to get so personal, I certainly didn't detect a tone from his posts that required him to be reprimanded by others? OK, I'm not offended by roll ups myself, so maybe it is only those that don't like roll ups saw a context in his posts that I simply never saw?

At any rate, SILH has been a member for over 12 years, posted over 33,000 times, and I can't say I've ever felt it in his character to be entitled, privileged or need to apologise for his vulgar tone. So, perhaps he deserves the benefit of the doubt that he meant no harm to anyone, and he does not need to be scolded?

Surely this isn't an overly controversial topic, not like we are talking about football, politics, Covid vaccinations or LIV golf. I'd have thought people could discuss what they like, or what they dislike, about roll ups in a fairly relaxed way?

Sorry but you're still thrashing about in the trees.

Nothing has been imposed on you and your group. The club for whatever reason has removed an inequitable privilege you were lucky to have had for so long.

You are now the same as everyone else. I don't see that in any shape of form as an imposition.

If this has caused a rift (and I presume that is between some of your group and the club) that is sad but it further cements my view of your group's feeling of entitlement.
