Saturday was our invitation day.

4BBB and it was won by yours truly and my scratch partner (who did most of the work!) with 42 points.

I found out when we got in that we had won on countback as there was already a 42 in.

The guy was positively thrilled (NOT) when I told him I'd chipped in from 20yds for our birdie on the last!

How is the V-Easy going Gary :D

Yea just got an email from HowDidIDo myself. Was cut to 18.5 with a further cut of 1.0 taking me to 17.5.

Just miss out on Division 3 for the Club Champs though, so will have to settle for Division 2.. should be a challenge!

Our medal was won by:

Div 1 = 82-13=69
Div 2 = 85-18=67

I'm in div 2 and shot a 93-17 =76, luckily the CSS was 73 so didn't gain .1

In fact that was my 3rd ever medal and first time I managed to play almost to my handicap. Was chuffed just tredding water, hopefully a cut next time.

I was playing with the guy who came 2nd in Div 1, he was 4 under the course par with 3 holes left and shot double bogey, double bogey and a bogey on the last. He wasn't very happy to say the least. Still shot a 73, net 69though, which for me would be amazing.

No medals this weekend, just a roll-up stableford on the Saturday off of the yellows.
Winner got 37 points out of a decent sized field.........sums up how tough the course is.

So am I right in thinking no-one who played to their handicap won anything?

This is a bit of a wind up to see if the Congu supporters bite

I know what you mean, but both my partner and I both played exactly on handicap to get our 42pts better ball. We just happened to each have our bad holes at the right time.

67 won at our course after results were finally updated. I think all the top 20-25 were under their handicap or bang on level par for their handicap.

Conditions were pretty good though where we are.

In my opinion, which probably is worth less than 2 cents, I think at the start of the season it is pretty hard for people who are playing to handicap to win much.

At the start of the year there are lots of people who have just joined new clubs or just got a handicap for the first time. The result of this is more people with higher handicaps, who quickly improve at the start and walk away with the medals.

For example, both myself and my friend joined our current course at the start of the year. Last year we played at a significantly harder course (IMO) where it was hard to put a round together to bring handicaps down. We joined with 26 and 27 handicaps and so far we have had 2nd in the Greensoms, an overall 3rd, 2nd and 1st between us. We both have been cut (i am now 22 and he is 17) and coming back into the main pack... this will continue with others for the next few weeks and will be a similar picture all over the UK.

I bet that if you looked at the figures towards the end of the season once cuts start to take effect and everyone balances out people playing to handicap will have a much higher chance of winning each week.

To win a Medal at my place I reckon I'd need a gross 72 net 67 (par 70 SSS 69) at worst.
To win a Stableford - at least 39 points, maybe more.
Normally

Although I have won a Stableford with 34 before now......

I'd say that on a given day and a (arbitrarily selected by me) entry of 80 players, at least a dozen or so are likely to shoot under their handicap to varying degrees. One of the dozen might smash their handicap, as evidenced by the low net scores posted by various people. But, on average, to have a decent shot at winning, you're probably going to have to shoot -3 or -4. It just might not be enough if someone shoots the lights out.

The level playing field isn't quite the same though, is it? For every person who shoots under or on h/c, you'll have at least one who shoots over. I reckon more people at my place shoot over than under in most comps.

I'd say the average net score is +1 or +2 but you need at least -3 to have a chance of winning.

I looked at all our results at our course from last season and the couple so far this season and results were :-
66, 65, 64, 69, 66, 69, 67, 63, captains 12 under (36 hole), 64, 64, 67, 64, 61, presidents 13 under (36 hole), 66, 66, 64, 64, 68, 68, 67, 66, 67.

Our course is par 72 SSS 70. Looking at the stats you need to be at least 3 under to have a sniff and even then that only won twice.
