Getting value for my membership? Oh yes. Only pay £500 for membership due to my age, and usual price is £820. Play at least once a week with comps or social golf, and there's great practice facilities to take advantage of too.

I am up there most days of the week either playing or practicing and playing both days at the weekend so in my case definitely. There are some things that are wrong with the place that I sometimes think I shouldn't be paying so much but I guess we can all be critical of our own courses at times.

IN the case of the OP it's obvious he's not really getting full value but what do you do? Leave and become nomadic but without an official handicap or just pay a notional joining fee to join somewhere and maintain it. Personally, I'd miss the friends and socialising at my own place and not entirely sure I''d want the effort of having to find new partners etc

I definitely get good value from my home club membership. I play 3 times per week in Summer on average an also try to practise every now and then too......but that usually ends up in 9 holes if the first tee is clear.

This is my first year as a country member at St Anne's Old links. It's an old school links course in Lytham that is always in amazing condition. I try to get there twice a month but have played there 3 times in the last 6 weeks. I envisage playing there most weekends in winter as they are always on a full course (tees and greens). I'm going to weigh up how much it has cost me per round after 12 months and see if it's worth keeping going.

High quality in a realistic distance to make use of is limited. I'm now thinking of City of Derry. It's a decent track but more importantly to me it's significantly cheaper to join. Even if I only played it 6 or so times I'd be getting better value for money and then price difference will pay for lots of opens at the higher quality courses in the country even when I take the additional fuel costs to play there into consideration :D

Cod your paying for 6months membership really anything else a bonus. Played it last week was wet!

They offer fexi which not to bad if playing after 6. Tho at weekend you eat the points in no time.

Remember also cod is a 13quid wed a round with a meal. 15 on Thursdays in open and a 10er on Friday mornings. They might also do cheap rounds after 5 which I think is a 10er aswell.

Another idea might be to join aughnacloy golf club not to play of course but for a GUI card. Their membership is like 150 quid a year then with that you can play opens.

Edit: also most important thing is having a four ball to play with. Not much point having a member ship in best course in the country if no four ball to play it with

Not really getting much more than 8 where I am. When winter tees kick in it ruins the layout to me as some are in places that the course isn't designed for and some of the pars 3 go longer than they a normally set for summer from the whites!

Thought about Aughnacloy but it is really out of the way. My dad is a member there to retain GUI but is thinking of going COD with me as he would still like to get the odd round but doesn't get near it. At least COD we'd be paying £50 more and would actually be likely to play it during the year and get the full 18 holes :D. Played it twice already in opens this year and the greens have been great and course in decent shape. Heard it's £100 to top-up the points and that would allow me more than enough rounds although based on my current playing pattern I'm unlikely to need to do that. Even if I did top-up that would still leave me £370 better off!

This year is not too bad. Being a teacher i get to play a lot during the summer and often out for a few holes just hacking. Practice facilities are very good and the sauna.......Ahhhh relax. Both my sons play as well so i look at the total cost (€1300). Next year could be a different story. Club raising adult membership to €1250 and elder son will be over 18. I'll have to see what other 'value' is on offer around October. Next year could end up costing €2300 !!!

The thing with membership is if you don't play, its not going to work out cost effective. we all know the time it takes to play a round and can work out how many times we can play in a year. I personally pick the comps I want to play in and if I have a free Saturday (if I can escape the clutches of Er Indoors and those Pesky kids!) than I'll join the Saturday Thrash for a relaxed game/banter etc. I can also pop up when the evenings are long to practise. there is also the evening social element. So I don't think you should look at the cost of it being Annual Fee V Times Played. Its the whole package and a case of you being flexible as possible.

I agree with those who say you can't just look at VfM as cost of membership v rounds played per annum. I have just started using the practice ground to introduce my 7 year old boy to the game and it is great for being able to do that. Afterwards we have a coke, a packet of crisps and a game of pool in the spike bar (bit of father / son bonding) and occasionally the Mrs and I have lunch in the clubhouse (bit of husband / wife bonding ha ha). It has also allowed me to sign on some friends and family as guests who otherwise would either not play or have to endure the local muni.

So, for me, the benefits I gain from my membership are much wider than simply unlimited rounds of golf.

I would say my club is slightly expensive, given the socio-economics of the area. There are lots of minimum wage jobs in warehouses and distribution centres kicking about, and to the majority of people (excluding very serious players and the retired) wouldn't consider a full membership at a golf club. Because there isn't much demand for a full membership, they offer a "club membership", which is very cheap at £40, and allows people to play in competitions, but just pay a green fee on the day. Another two local club offer only this form of membership.

Club membership is £40, A 5-day season ticket is £550, and a 7-day £650, with a £150 joining fee. You can have one without the other, so a 7-day membership to play in competitions is £690 per year. Given the green fees, you'd have to play nigh-on once a week to save money. However, there isn't a range or practice greens, so a lot of members just have a quick few holes with multiple balls for a practice at a quiet time. I've only recently joined, so I'm seeing if I enjoy it first before I pay the £650, but it looks like my cricket team might be folding next season, so I'll be playing even more next year.

At my last club I had an introductory offer as a junior, which was £120 for the year, and had excellent practice facilities with free range balls. A green fee was £40, so as you can imagine, this particular year worked out EXTREMELY economical :D However, it was a bit too far away, and competitions were always too busy and difficult to get into, so I left.

Sounds like where I play, only a Muni, but £12.50 a month unlimited golf works for me while I'm getting my barings.

When I became a member again a couple of years back I knew the simple VFM would nit work out. But I was paying for that flexibility of being able to rock up and play 10 holes, 8 holes, range + 4 holes or whatever. Didn't have that as a nomad. This year I have played more but think have only done one non comp 18 holes.

I'm definitely getting good value from my membership thanks to flexible working hours.
We have two full championship courses and probably the best 9 hole course in Scotland and I'm £745 for the year, with a £50 green fee for visitors after approximately two months play I'm getting my golf for free.

An unbelievable deal, probably pound for pound the best in the UK for the facilty you have.
