I very nearly wrote an explosive rant about last nights dismal attempt to play 18 after work (course packed with people who have no etiquette, threw the towel in after 9, no fun) but I've told myself it'll do no good and I should just breathe and calm down.

However...

Our course introduced silly-cheap playing options about a month ago and now members can't get a game without it taking forever to get round. I'm all for making golf affordable, but this is practically free. Surely such cheap rates should restrict those players to certain (off-peak) times. If they are making money off this, and I fail to see that its worth the members subs they're going to lose, where is it going?! Not back into the course. Its in worse condition than ever, hardly surprising given that many "players" I saw last night wouldn't know a pitchfork if it...

You know.

So, without having a meltdown, is it just me or has our club shafted us? So to speak. Cos that's how it feels.

Surely the club is obliged to try and generate new revenue streams. But, they should review these practises fairly regularly and consult the members. If the majority of members don't like them. Then they stop. Maybe you could check to see if there is a consultation, and if there isn't then bring it to the council meeting and ask for one. You can only be turned down, at which point you leave. There are plenty of courses that want your money...

I'm guessing you are not a member of a 'members' club, but are at either a muni, or a commercial enterprise run for profit.

I would be suprised at a members club doing this, but nothing ever amazes me about clubs run by businesses, or by the council.

Nope, not a members club or a muni, just a golf club run for profit. Absolutely understand they need to make money, but if they're not even going to put some back into the maintenance of the place it won't be long before all these extra bodies take a lasting toll on the turf. Half the greens are in appalling condition, think they got some disease over the winter and haven't been treated properly, that and the fact that every time I step on a green I repair at least 3 pitch marks, sometimes I feel like myself and the buddy are the only people who give a toss.

Thanks for the advice about raising it at a members meeting, I definitely think some sort of formal complaint needs to be made, with all this extra money they could employ a marshal for busy times, might not speed up play but would hopefully sort out people who are out there for the mess making sh*t of the place and roaring at each other, might be great fun for them but I've always felt that conducting ourselves like gentlemen/women on the course is one of the great aspects of the game and those who don't appreciate that shouldn't be allowed back. If you want to play crazy golf go to Skeg pier.

Build a hole with a huge hill that you have to climb up to reach the green. Sure people will come if the price is right, but they don't come back !!!!! He he ! Anyone i ask always mentions it.

I guess they have a delicate balancing act on their hands - maximise per-play revenue while keeping pay-in-advance members happy.

Have you made them aware of your frustrations about not being able to play the course? They may not know. If they do know ask what they are going to do about it and start looking for somewhere else for next year if you don't like their answer!
