The hype around caddies

Agreed.
So locals are the way to go?
Whats the benefit of a full time guy?
Must be pros & cons?

One of the guys I used to play with probably would have retained his card on the European Tour had he used local caddies on the African swing just for their knowledge of the greens.

He used the same caddie all year round as it was one of his mates. When I was discussing with him about it he said having someone you know is very important as it can be very lonely on tour.

Even with my inexperience I realised there there was stuff I knew as a local who'd played the course hundreds of times that a full time caddy may or may not get on practice days, but I suppose they have to weigh that against your second point about the loneliness etc

Players are very hot at orientation/ reading courses/greens during practice but it's somewhat limited by the conditions on the day with respect to wind etc when you have a hole with clever challenges

@Burnsey and @Highfade I really don’t care how all this started, but it finishes now. Any more of it and this thread gets locked (which would be a great shame as there’s lots of good discussion) and warnings will follow.

I am not willing to see an otherwise decent thread derailed by petty sniping. EDIT - and the same applies should the exchanges continue elsewhere.

Where a job is multifaceted, like that of a pro golfer, why not employ someone who is better at certain aspects of it. The strength is in recognising your own weaknesses and then mitigating them by bringing in someone with better skills.

There has been suggestions in the past that to speed up play caddy’s should carry the bag and nothing else. Personally, I believe that anything that improves the entertainment value is a bonus.
