The longest Par 3

This 900 yard par 3 is in South Africa. The green is shaped like the African continent and completely surrounded by a sea of sand. You hit off a cliff over 1,400 feet above the hole and it takes 26 seconds for your ball to land. You have to take a helicopter to get to the hole. They post spotters around the green to let you know where your ball lands because you cannot possibly see it. Padraig Harrington is the only person to ever par it. He did it in a playoff after a recent tournament there. It is the 19th-hole and only used for playoffs.

Watch him do it. Cut and paste the link below into your browser...........

I doubt there are very many people who can say they have even played it, let alone say they have hit the green.

I enjoyed that, thanks.

We have a similar hole to that, our 17th. 230 yard par 3. With a head wind Most cant hit it with a driver in winter.

Ok so its not quite the same but it feels like it :D

There is a cliff top par three at a course in Donegal if I remember rightly, the only other one I can think of is at Ardglass near RCD, its a fantastic par 3.

Imagine you had to parachute back down from that cliff in S. Africa....:O

Yea Steve its Ardglass in Northern Ireland, thats the back sticks but as you can see the normal tees arnt much further forward. I wish our course had this hole, it would sort the men from the boys.

Not quite in the same league, but at Oakhampton golf club down here in Devon, they have a par 3 called the drop, the greens about 75yards below the tee. All you need is a sandwedge or even a lobwedge. I've only played it once, but was over the back with my sand iron.

Bit of a marmite hole.

Argh Oakhapton, I stayed there for a week using the Ranges. Not driving ranges though, Firing Range. O the joy.... O the pain. :(

I'd seen / heard of the hole before, but thanks for the video link that was great. How would they sort out a play off with Monty involved though, if it was at that course? If I'm right he isn't keen on flying!

I definitely fancy giving it a go. I also now want to play Ardglass after the picture Brendy posted- a more realistic dream, and a beautiful hole. I wonder how many days a year the weather is like that though ;)

Not quite in the same league but the 12th at Wimbledon Common (Queensmere) is a 245 yard par 3 off the whites (right on the limit). It does play a fraction downhill and so in the summer you can get there with a 5 wood or a hybrid but in the winter it can be a 3 wood or driver. Oh yes and it is very, very tight with trees down the right

The Grove has a down hill 255 yarder, played off the blacks. Yep, the first time out I should have hit a driver, but refused to admit that I am a bit short off the tee, so elected to hit a 5w into the front bunker instead.

Mastered it this weekend though. Topped a 3w to 110, wedged it to 5 ft, and made the uphill par putt. Proper golf.

There's one at the Lostwithiel Golf & Country Club Cornwall. Only about 120 yards, but it fills like 120 yards long and 120 yards down. A couple of us had a buggy about ten years ago and nearly turned the thing over on the way down, its like going down Lombard Street in San Francisco.

At the back of the green is the OB fence and then the railway line, so if you time it badly you could hit a train.
If I remember it correctly I hit the green on both occasions we played the course, sounds like more luck than judgement.

Homer:

You replied to one of my posts the other day about playing your first round at Coulsdon Court. Well Wimbledon Common was the first course I swung a club at with my father who was a member there over 40 years ago. I remember you HAD to wear red, and the course was shared with London Scottish who had their club near the windmill. I can remember getting a ball over the ravine, which seemed a long way when I was a small boy.
