Lots of discussion re why the goal scorer was not booked last night. Thereā€™s a lot of opinions and even more rose tinted glasses. However whether you like it or not. This probably ( and I say probably as some still wonā€™t accept it) explains why play was not stopped for a booking.
From the BBC

Already on a booking, Bergvall brought down Tsimikas but play continued with Liverpool retaining possession.

However, Tsimikas was then off the pitch receiving treatment when Bergvall scored to seal a 1-0 first-leg victory for Spurs.

The International Football Association Board's Laws of the Games state: "If the referee plays the advantage for an offence for which a caution/sending-off would have been issued had play been stopped, this caution/sending-off must be issued when the ball is next out of play.

"However, if the offence was denying the opposing team an obvious goalscoring opportunity, the player is cautioned for unsporting behaviour; if the offence was interfering with or stopping a promising attack, the player is not cautioned."

The crucial part of the above is the final sentence. The offence - the foul by Bergvall - was interfering with a promising attack.

If referee Stuart Attwell did indeed play advantage then, applying the above, he did not have to go back and caution Bergvall.

But the laws also state "advantage should not be applied in situations involving serious foul play, violent conduct or a second cautionable offence unless there is a clear opportunity to score a goal."

Was this a clear opportunity to score? Debatable.

He looked like he was a player that could be sold to help PSR
Definitely. In the past he would have been kept on, maybe sent on loan again. You would see if he developed and could be of use. Now, clubs have to sell this type of player, risking losing a good one. I get that it stops some clubs, yes Chelsea I'm looking at you, from hoarding players but the reality is that far more normal clubs are affected by this than the goliaths.

Virgil van Dijk on Bergvall during a post match interview: ā€œI think it was quite obvious it was gonna be a second yellow. It was pretty clear. All people saw thatā€¦ minute later he scored the winner, the ref made a mistake in my opinion, I told him thatā€.

Last season, during a post match interview Neco Williams received a Ā£24,000 fine from the FA for expressing a negative opinion about a referee in a game he had just taken part in.

I therefore have every confidence that the FA will apply exactly the same yardstick to Mr van Dijk and issue a similar fine to him for the above comments.

Ah but next time as your team is in the top 6 your players can say what they want now šŸ˜

Itā€™s poor imo that players and managers can express a negative opinion about the officials - providing itā€™s respectful

The idea that officials are hands off is poor

You would have thought we recent events the PGMOL might actually stop protecting them

He would have been/ was a year ago!

We actually bought him back in the summer (clause in contract to match offers) for around 16m, so this sale only generates Ā£4m despite him originally being an academy prospect.

Rumour has it were after a guy called Malen from Dortmund for about 16m - Philogene isnt good enough atm for villa so a sale and replacement for 4m profit is smart business... the PSR merry go round!

If that is all he said then I would not want to see him fined for that. If Sky are going to drag the players out and ask for their opinions then we can't fine players for giving them can we? He's worded that respectfully. If he called the ref a cheating **** then that would be fine-worthy.

I would love it for a referee to be criticised by a player and then to respond with a list of all the passes he misplaced, missed tackles etc and show that players actually make a lot more mistakes than a referee ever does šŸ˜

No-one else is breaking into that cartel Arthur. You know it and I know it!

You can do it šŸ˜

The players are critisized every single day by media , fans , managers etc - and they also have consequences for their mistakes

Doesnā€™t seem to be any for a referee

In fairness, had Neco Williams said what VVD had said, that the referee made a mistake in his opinion, I'm sure there would be no fine. However, he didn't. Williams said ""Every single week this happens now. We are getting decisions against us, I donā€™t know why. Is it because we are a lower, bottom half of the table team?". It seems clear to me that he was suggesting some sort of general bias from officials against Forest, thus clearly questioning the integrity of how they treat Forest.

That is worth a fine to me.

Mind you, I don't want to take that statement from VVD out of context, as he might have had a lot more to say. But, I hope he also focused on how Liverpool defended that situation and how they played overall. Ultimately, Liverpool players have to take most of the responsibility for not winning the game. They could have defended that better, they could have scored a goal, etc. But they didn't
