Interesting one in the Gakpo one with the keeper.

Ref can stop the game in the” spirit of fair play” is this correct. Never heard that before!

If so how come they never did that in the Spurs / Liverpool game when Diaz scored and they realised they had made a massive cock up.?

That's not stopping the game tho is it? That's restarting the game after the event

They stopped the event happening

the champions league with Gabriel handing the ball comes to mind with "sprite of the game"

No he stopped the game as Gakpo got to the ball as he had played advantage.
The ball was still in play.

If the ref can stop the game in the “ spirit of fair play” it shouldn’t matter if it’s been restarted or not.

Problem is it does

Just like they can't review a goal that comes from a corner that was never a corner

The Diaz situation they should never have restarted the game

Soon as the games restarted that's the chance to correct an error gone as per the current rules

No wonder they make so many mistakes.
Who thinks up these rules it’s a joke.

One Sunday Liverpool pushed out and caught striker miles offside but defender heads cross and corner given.
Surely that’s the end of phase so Lino should put his flag up.

That’s why I asked.
Is stopping the game in the spirit of fair play allowed.? Is it in the rules ?

If so why does the ball have to stay in play and not be restarted.? What’s fair about that?

The referee can stop play in circumstances not directly within the law, as there may be exceptional circumstances. But, stopping play does not mean he can rewrite history, or disobey laws in black and white, thus making it up as he goes along. Which is exactly why they couldn't rectify Diaz goal mistake.

That being said, I still don't get the reason he stopped play at weekend. The goalkeeper pulling up his socks didn't signal to me he was injured. It just looked like the ref messed up

So he can basically do what he wants as witnessed on Sunday.

But can’t if the balls dead and restarted .

I think the comments of spurs manager was correct the ref dosnt control the game anymore Stockley park do.
As witnessed with the Rice penalty.

They said “ can’t stop the game”
Difference is VAR cocked up and Ref had restarted the game. No VAR in this one and game hadn’t restarted.

Without being funny, did you read the review? Areola was on the ground when Taylor waved play on, Gakpo and a defender checked on him as he’d gone over on his ankle, once he got up he threw the ball down believing he had a free kick, it was at this point Taylor blew his whistle as it wasn’t a free kick, when he got to him he realised he was in distress and called the physio on.
He then had to restart play with a drop ball.

Exactly it wasn’t a free kick ?

He was in distress? Why, could he not pull his sock above his shin pad?

The keeper cocked up, as he thought it was a free kick. When he put ball down, there was no indication he was injured or needed treatment

Why did he stay on the ground after the challenge? Why did the 2 players (incl 1 opposition) check on him?

Use another word if you like, but Taylor must of had a reason to call the physio on, otherwise he’d of just restarted with a drop ball.

To cover his own backside.

Keepers go down on the ball all the time wasting time.

How long does that advantage last.
The keeper made a big error imo and the ref just got him and himself out of jail.
Advantage dost last if you just give the ball to the striker!
I know you don’t like it, but, as explained, the keeper thought it was a free kick, he obviously didn’t see Taylor signal to play the advantage, he threw it down believing it was a free kick and Taylor put him straight. ie, In the spirit of the game.
