The Cricket Thread

Rubbish. Comparison with football hooliganism is a massive stretch.

Too much in sport is being sanitised.
Send offs and sledging are both pointless and futile particularly as cricket is not a game involving direct physical cy.

Random Cricket Irritation

How long is a cricket pitch? 22 YARDS

So why is that prize nob Hussain constantly going on about landing the ball eight METRES down?
And why are they recording sixes in METRES?

No they are not. It’s a mental thing. Get under the skin of the oppo. The greatest test team ever (Aussies) were amazing at it.
That was because of their cricketing abilities.

Were that not the case they wouldn't have been beaten in 2005.

The effect of sledging has been massively overstated for years as it makes for good after dinner speeches. And those are generally as boring as the sledging.

It was a massive part of their game. Mental disintegration was what they called it.

It didn’t always work. The Ashes series in 2005 was brilliant watching and intense.

It had more to do with boosting their own self confidence rather than affecting the opposition.

The best bit of sledging was one of the Waughs to Rob Key. He came out to bat down under early in his thankfully short career. No-one says anything, Key takes his guard and then Waugh wanders over and says loudly "what are you doing out here with us?"
Gilchrist had to turn away and hide his face in his gloves. Key did not last very long.
Psychologically brilliant.

So a good win for Eng.. should all be wrapped up in the next 30 mins or so... early lunch with ducks on the menu

Loving the aggression on both sided.. a bit of fiery passion. Not sure if i agree it was Siraj's fault. If you view the video from the non striker end. Siraj was running straight down his usual bowling follow thru. Yes he was shouting. Duckett decides to walk across and shoulder.

Nah, the best bit of sledging will always be Jimmy Ormond. When he walked out to bat, Steve Waugh told him pointedly that there was no way that he was good enough to be playing for England - to which Ormond replied "maybe not Steve, but at least I'm the best player in my own family".

On Key, I also thought the comment made to him in an U19 international was great - I think it went "c'mon lads, he's sweating mars bars out here".
