I've gone all in from a hot hatch to a Jag I pace. Fantastic car and glad I made the switch. It's a used one as they are so cheap, in relative terms. Massive spec and a decent range. Doing cambs to Cornwall soon and looks like I'll have to make a couple of stops, which is the same as usual. Looks like we can use Tesla super chargers as well.

The depreciation top 10 video posted a while back had them on top. If you buy new you are the loser, if you buy used you can’t get a better bargain.

Do Jaguars still get free parking at all golf clubs ? ;-)

As a Jaaaag driver I can pretty much do as I please now anyway. 😂 I got mine from JLR, with 2 year warranty but you can get them for under 20k ! They are a 70k luxury SUV

Yup.. nailed it
Ok, I disagree. Here's why...

I have a modest 3.7kW system. No battery. It will produce about 4000kWh per year. Quite a lot of that (perhaps 3000) will be exported, at 15p (Octopus fixed export). I use about 2500kWh per year. Will probably need to import about 1500 of that, at an average of 18p (Octopus Tracker tariff).

So (back of fag packet estimate) that's £450 income from import, £270 expenditure on import, net £180 income. Without solar it would be £450 outgoings. So that's £630 saved per year. Cost of system, about £6k. Return about 10%.

Add in a battery, I can now use all my generation and export the excess 1500 units at 15p. So that's £225 income and no expenditure. Without the system it would be £450 expenditure. So total saved is now £675 per year from a system costing about £9k. Return is down to about 7.5%. For my type of low usage household, the battery just doesn't make sense.

Make sense…. We went for broke on size of the system (irrespective of usage). We have a 6k system and I haven’t worked out the numbers yet. I have also realised we have a higher consumption (esp with the EV).
So now we are starting to pivot and export more, shift consumption etc. would not be impossible without the battery, but made much easier. I guess as production increases, it might be easier to export more. But as winter gets in, battery will be upper hand

Is there any suggestions for 2nd hand via a limited company?

I'm not up with the ins and outs of limited companies but can you set up salary sacrifice schemes? https://octopusev.com/nearly-new-evs

They have a nearly new EV scheme

If not there are plenty of cars out there ATM , Tesla have plenty of used stock

I'd look at the Korean models , Hyundai and Kia

VW first gen of the id series are coming to the market second hand. Some really good prices on the id3 as they have been face lifted which is basically a VW golf

Does depend on your needs , distance traveling at a time (IE what battery size would work) recharge speeds vary by model. My niro is slow by this generation but the ev6 from Kia is much faster so you can be on the way again sooner (again depends on your needs)

Home charging available? I'd highly recommend zappi or ohme as the charger of choice. Can get onto the cheap octopus intelligent tariff via both of them.

Normally for long distance I'd say Tesla without a shadow of a doubt but with Elon tinkering with his supercharger plans recently it's hard to guage what's the right decision

Interesting to see cars from a few Chinese manufacturers starting to hit the shores. Gives more choice but more importantly will drive the price down.

Have a look at the Geely galaxy.. it’s on fully charged.
Also there are some Zeekr cars coming as well early next year.
Unfortunately they will be hit with the EU import tax, and we won’t see them in the UK market just yet.
Volvo EX30 will have some big news as well.
To be honest I understand the import tax but I think the EU and UK manufacturers are not trying hard enough .. it’s just a long list of excuses and any government hand outs are met with a price increase.

I agree. The biggest lowering of prices in the EV market have been from Tesla cutting prices which other manufacturers follow and then brands like MG Coming to the forefront

I also think having read the EV car website they make a valid point about 2nd users not getting tax breaks for business use, as comparable to new car sales. I also don’t see leasing as the right choice for all either.

Well one of the manifesto promise seems to be 'Great British Energy'... sounds good.

But, i think one of the best thing that happened in the industry were the outliers like Bulb and Octopus. More specifically Octopus. They bring a lot of innovation and push the boundaries. While i like the idea of another provider in the mix, i hope they dont do that by forced nationalisation. I would love to see competition. If they offer a good product then let people switch to GBE, but please dont force folks like Octopus out

Forced nationalisation might actually be more in the public’s interest given the amount of non competitive behaviour we see in all of our utilities since privatisation.
Basically it’s all been a farce, and it’s let in foreign investors who are walking out with our money.
It really makes sense to go off grid, having solar and batteries to supply .. I would even burn wet wood ..

I agree.. outside of Octopus, everyone is the same.. hence if they introduce a GBE, let customers join if GBE is competitive. But if Octo customers don’t want to go, don’t force them.
On topic, would be great to see a GBE drive more Public charging network. That should be critical national infrastructure

Having a state owned business in the mix might put some pressure on the privateers

The great British energy company might include octopus, I mean it's all green energy and octopus have been lobbying government for a while for more renewables

They might get a lot of it running

Octopus has changed the market, forced a lot of companies to change the way they work

Eon drive is cheaper than them now and you don't need an EV for example, just have to go to eon!

I'm not sure if this one has been covered before..........I was parked up in a car park in my local town this morning, directly opposite 4 charging bays. One was in use and then a large American pick up truck drove into one of the other bays. The truck had been modified so it really was a US style truck and so probably wouldn't fit in a standard parking bay. (For some reason, electric car bays are slightly bigger 🤷🏻‍♂️)

Anyway, apart from being selfish, if this just on a par with people parking in parent and child spaces without a child present or is it an offence? We have a highly active set of traffic wardens in our town and there is no doubt they will see thus truck parked there. Will they give them a ticket?

Just curious.
