Slightly untrue at the end. We have. Just beeching was to close them. Then British rail was sold off

We have had proper ones

Proper bad ones
Just had a little look at the Beeching Report, Its always been something I was aware of but not the details, it was 1963 after all!

But just from Wiki...

"The first report identified 2,363 stations and 5,000 miles (8,000 km) of railway line for closure, amounting to 55% of stations, 30% of route miles, and the loss of 67,700 British Rail jobs,"
Wow it really was brutal!

It was an attempt to save money because of the massive railways subsidies at the time but it seems like it made very little difference. The aim being to force more people to use the roads

And just to prove nothing ever changes in Politics the Minister of Transport, Ernest Marples who appointed Beeching was the founder of a successful Road construction Company!

My god. We agree on something .. note the date!!! Lol 😂

I wasn't going to post the entire bit because it's crossing into the P word

But I will post one word for it

CRIMINAL

Being a railway worker we are more than aware of these historical events so sticks in the memory a lot.

It's disgusting (another word for it)

I have a cycle lane at the top of my road that will take me to Hull without going on any roads. ( run by a charity) like to many things in this country.
But there isn’t one to get to Liverpool city centre ???

I was in a suburb of Newcastle on Saturday, Jesmond. It's only a mile or so from the centre, big student area as well as young families. At one point I was driving besides a dedicated cycle path, rubber ramps separating the cyclists from the cars. Ideal. Then the separation ended, the road narrowed and it became an absolute death trap for cyclists. The first section is entirely pointless if it ends well before people's destination. This happens so often with cycle lanes 🤦‍♂️

Let's also not ignore the fact that cyclists are made out to be the villain so often aswell. We need all these schemes to encourage cycling

London is basically 20mph now and lots of cycle lanes. It takes longer to travel by car for sure but the fact it's safer for cyclists, pedestrians and people living on those roads is widely ignored because of the entitled behaviour of some drivers.

To be fair, cyclists have as many idiots as drivers, pedestrians crossing without looking etc. The problem is not the mode of transport, it's people. I do agree however at the need to encourage cyclists but the only way to really do that is to separate them from cars. The nature, or design, of too many of our towns and cities do not lend themselves to that, sadly.

During COVID a lot of London's bus lanes were made 24 hours so that cycles had a safer place to ride

Ofc met with uproar by drivers

Think it adds 5-10 mins a day to my drive, grand scheme of things does that matter for all of the safer riding we have provided to encourage green transport?

We as a nation don't like being told to do things, we genuinely believe people will do what is right eventually, but in reality without a bit of force to adopt people will continue until the end of time

Can I mention my electric moped scooter? £3k, up to 45 mph and easily 30 mikes range. Parking for free, no ulez, no congestion charge.

I commute for £2 a week, that’s was before we got solar panels.

It’s in the garage for repair this week, £14 a day and stressed about train times. Can’t wait to collect it again, hopefully Saturday.

Cracking work. Very cost effective form of transport

I used to live in Milton Keynes. The redway system was brilliant - you could cycle anywhere in the city using only the redways and local residential roads.
But that didn't stop some idiots cycling along the main dual carriageway grid roads.

It's always people that ruin good ideas.

We had a pump at the station for bikes to use for their tyres

Latest a year before some twonk cut it off

I hope someone is going to visit Elephant and Castle at 5:30/6/7 in the morning. Still totally dark, yet those lovely cyclists insist on no lights, dark clothes and will not use the very expensive cycle lane system.
Of course its the motorists that get the blame..

Isn't that illegal to use on the road?

It has changed, second hand prices have dropped dramatically

I just got delivered a 3 year old Hyundai Kona electric 15k

Does 250 miles to a charge

Great condition
Stayed away from second hand cars for 20yrs.
Mines only a year old .
When I change it next I will look at an EV.
Makes sense for me , low mileage and short journeys .

Learnt a lot from this thread.
Mainly it’s horses for courses .
Keep the info coming !👍👍👍

I do a lot of cycling and might be able to offer a reason.

Not saying it’s the reason but all the debris from the road is pushed into the cycle lane and unless it’s cleaned regularly it’s full off glass and loose material.

If it’s a stand alone lane then no excuse.
No excuse for no lights and dark clothes at that time some people are just stupid.

I like a blend, the plan ATM is to own these cars long as possible and when it's time to change the Hyundai the Kia becomes the second car and lease a new one (our company getting electric car salary sacrifice next year)

But in comparison the Hyundai 15k 3 years old. Brand new Kia 43k .. ridiculous. I know it's top of range but that is silly money

These aren't illegal.

None of the scooters everyone is getting confused with can go 45 mph

No, its fully segregated with physical barriers, painted white lines and it's own traffic lights, which of course are ignored anyway.

I have been passed by a young male riding an electric stand up scooter. I was doing 40 on a dual carriageway, and he flew between the 2 lanes and zoomed off so must have been doing at least 55/60. No protetcive gear on either, just jeans and a tee.
