Caught the tail end of an argument in the clubhouse today. From what I could gather, one player had taken exception to being asked to attend the flag. He believed the player asking was just being a nob and trying some form of gamesmanship. I did make me wonder though what I'd do. TBF I can't remember the last time anyone asked anyway but if they did, Id do it, however I would point out it's a waste of time. I would also think they are a nob 😅 is anyone still asking for it to be tended? Would you do it if asked. ?

No problem at all. Logically, someone might think the ball goes in the hole easier wiry no flag, but they're too far to see it clearly.

If someone is trying to wind you up, it's better to show mo reaction.
If someone gets wound up by being asked to tend the flag, then maybe a sport like golf isn’t for them

Of course it is fine still to do. A player may not want the flag in hole if ball is going in, but needs it tended as they can't see it.

If anyone gets in a huff for being asked to tend a flag, they are clearly highly sensitive

Before the rule changed I was asked by a fellow competitor, from another club, to tend the club but he also insisted that I stood 3 or 4 paces away before he putted as he didn’t like anyone standing close to the hole cluttering up his vision. So I had to rush in to take the flag out as soon as he struck the ball.
I did do this all the way round but was very tempted to refuse.

No one asked me in years anyway so a moot point for me really. Id have to disagree with the second part, you never know what a person may be going through . Those kind of sweeping generalisations best kept to yourself

Id have to say, I would not have been doing that .!

It’s not something I’ve even thought about. Most at ours simply putt with the flag in our out. It’s very rare that anyone asks for it to be tended these days but, if they did, I’d do it.

Any suggestion of gamesmanship is just pathetic.

Haven't been asked or seen anyone ask to do this since the rule change. If asked, I'd do it, not a big deal. I'd look quizzical most probably but there's a range of things that people do at times whilst playing golf that gives me the same reaction so it wouldn't be anything new 😄

Not sure if the rule was in place before the change but 13.2b states the player attending the flag should hold the flag and then remove it when the stroke has been made. Seems to me that moving in is/wasn’t allowed?

I didn't say the person didn't have justifiable reasons to be over sensitive, simply that they were being over sensitive.

But, generally speaking, I will say if anyone gets into a sulk because they were asked to tend a flag, it's pathetic. Of course, I'd forgive them if there were clear reasons that gamesmanship was going on, or their pet gold fish died that morning.

I wished I’d known this at the time. As it was a comp and also I’d probably never play with the guy again as he was from another club, I just went along but did think he was a total nob.

I remember another time, as a new member, many years ago playing a knockout with someone who wanted the flag tended at almost all times, even on 3 or 4 footers, I think it was some kind of gamesmanship to irritate me or give me less time to study my putt. As usual with such petty nonsense it just made winning sweeter.
