Occasional Player of Golf
With the 1st relatively independent big tournament of the year approaching I was mulling this over. Not expecting any change, but as the forum has been discussing things so nicely lately...
I imagine back in the day there were some common benefits of doing this and maybe still are.
Was a way of agreeing the calendar. Players don't have to request permission to play in the majors. And it avoids a tour setting up a competing big money tournament.
With player power as it seems these days, if hypothetically they were not sanctioned could we imagine say Scheffler not being 'allowed' to partake in a major?
TBH I don't mind that part so much, but am less keen on this... a quiz:
How many PGAT events has Willet won?
How many DPWT events has Harman win?
For me, the answer to both is zero, but they won majors.
Not what the tours will say though.
I'd also prefer it of the OOM for the tours didn’t include the majors.
Seems odd that a high placing in a major can earn big points in two tours at same time. Maybe the majors are special enough that this is fine.
Whilst some years Rory's DPWT exploits have earned him the OOM, for others it has been the majors that jumped him over others.
In the last few tumultuous years it was surprising initially how many (perhaps more casual) golf fans genuinely thought the majors were all run by the PGAT. But then if you follow the marketing, and the US tv it is easier to see how this may happen.
What do you think, are they big and established enough that they could become more independent, or would the risks be too great and they might wither away?
