Should golf be more judgemental?

Have you ever played 18 holes with 50-year-old clubs and enjoyed it?
Would you like to give it a try?
You don't have to be weird, but it might help.
Actually I have yes. I have my dad’s old Sam Snead Blue Ridge blades which he had in the 70s and his Ben Sayers Mentor Forged blades from the 80s. Before I stopped playing I’d often take them out for fun.

This year on my dads birthday we’re going to toss a coin and see who gets to use what set and play a round with them, his birthday also coincides with Open weekend so it feels poignant to do.

I’ve always enjoyed playing with them it’s different l, though not sure what that’s got to do with me wanting golf to be less judgemental 🤔

Extra marks for taking the tricky route through the windmill blades? 😆

Although if you want to add a 1 shot penalty for not completing your round in a certain cutoff time I’m all in favour. The clock stops if you’re being held up by the group in front but otherwise up to you to get round. I can see absolutely no downsides to this….

One could of course use it to assist with dress codes. You can add strokes on for wearing ankle socks with shorts and not having a proper v neck or not wearing a tie in the club house.

You would need to attend an interview first and be proposed and seconded by 37 members.
Then you have to play 27 rounds with a member of the committee, foursomes obviously
Sounds a lot like joining North Hants! One of the things that put me off, large joining fee, interview with committee, playing interview and then need one of those to propose and second you. AKA golf of the dark ages!

I'm all in for strokes taken to be supplemented with a score for artistic merit. Bonus points for a graceful club twirl.

It would influence shot strategy, attempting more difficult shots would gain more points e.g. trying to play a spinny 60 degree lob wedge from the fringe instead of a simple bump and run.

Funnily enough it’s the place I was looking at joining as have a mate there.
It seems strange that the club seems stuck in the 1960s but the fees are more like 2060.
He reckons as a club it’s great but I have ruled it out as I’m not paying what they are asking as I’m not convinced I will enjoy it there and can guarantee I’ll fall foul of some of the rules

Small world 🤣. It was one I was really keen on and looking at until the joining process cropped up, felt more like it was designed to keep people out rather than let them in. Love the golf course but just don’t think I’d fit in overly well and like you would fall foul somewhere !

Now this is a very weird coincidence.
I bought a full set of Sam Snead Blue Ridge and a set of Ben Sayers Mentor irons within two days of each other.
The Mentors are late 80s early 90s, less than 40 years old, and I sold them 2 years later for a tidy profit. Many consider them to be a very fine classic club.

I love a good tangent when the thread is bonkers anyway. ;)

The Snead Blue Ridge I couldn’t tell What year they were manufactured but I can say they’re the same as the one in the top right of your image (Says Wilson Radial sole on the bottom of the irons), more of a grey look to them than a chrome finish. I learnt to grip a club using them as he had a grip trainer fitted to the 8 iron and he would always use it at the range to warm up, but make me sit watching him hit balls holding it to get used to it. Also weirdly my first set of irons were hand me downs off my brother Patty Berg Cup defenders which are identical to the Blue ridge Sneads, so I learnt using old blades !

The Mentors I know he definitely had them in the late 80s, as he only replaced them with the Mizuno TP11s around 1990 as I remember it being my 10th birthday and that’s when I was given the Patty Bergs so I thought it was cool hitting my new to me clubs whilst my dad had new sticks

Everytime I used the Mentors they felt buttery smooth.

The grey, or satin finish one was from a separate joblot purchase. A lovely 2-iron that fits very nicely with that set.

That’s the model! Haven’t got the original grips though, they’ve got Golf Pride Victory grips. I might have to pop round my mums and get them out the garage this weekend for a knock.

Have a look at speed golf. My mates son plays it and it’s absolutely mental.
The times and scores they go round in are almost unbelievable
I'm not interested in sprinting round a golf course, I just don't want to take more than 4 hrs for 18 holes nor watch pro's take even longer.

I agree it’s how I like to play.
Watching the pros play when it’s really slow is enough to put me to sleep.
They really do need to be given a time limit

North Hants is a very nice course and anytime I have played there the welcome has been very nice
