We’re up in Fife playing the 4 day golf pairs comp and are playing a 9 hole course every afternoon and found some great courses! They’re everywhere, in decent condition and offer an entry point to golf for beginners or those wanting a cheaper casual round that doesn’t take too long. We should definitely have more of these in England!

Where did you play? I can’t think of many decent ones beyond Anstruther. Possibly Cupar but it’s hit and miss.

Anstruther is the worst of the three we’ve played so far. 3-6 are decent but the other 5 are bland.

Glenisla was the first. It used to be an 18 hole course but Alyth bought it, sold the front nine for houses and kept the back 9 so it plays like a proper course. The other was Lochore which was far from easy with a beck going across several of the holes. Greens didn’t look great be they ran really well.

We’ve St Boswell on the border on the way back tomorrow but it’s always hard to tell from the Ariel’s until you get there.

Gatehouse of Fleet is supposed to be a very good little 9 holer in Galloway.

I have on very good authority it’s a smashing place

EDIT: I realise the OP asked about 9 hole courses in England, but, well, you know…🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧😂

Surprised by Ainster. It’s usually top notch. Lochore Meadows (known as the Meedies) is a run down council course. I learned to play there as a youth. It’s in danger of closure due to cuts.

Glenisla is Perthshire. I read from your post that it was all Fife, hence my confusion as we only have a few 9 holers left in the Kingdom.

Yeah the Fife golf trip goes all the way to scotscraig. Anstruther is probably like everywhere else, due to the lack of rain they are getting a bit scared of cutting it but the greens were so slow. Visually Meedies was worse but it actually played better.

Scotland do have a good amount but there are some good ones in England

Worlington is the best of the bunch

Same with Reigate

Now wondering how many I can tick off! Albeit I’m not sure how all the north east of England courses qualify given they’re west of Leeds! Someone at NCG needs a geography lesson! 😂

Must be a dryness thing as it’s normally quick greens as a main defence.

Meedies used to be a bit of a gauntlet experience, it sits right next to a bad area and you’d often get Buckfast bottles thrown at you from the trees on many holes.

It’s a decent layout but it receives the least funds of the 5 council courses. Used to be £4.50 for nine holes. Think it’s about £10 now but they don’t keep the money, centralised and then unequally distributed.

We have a 9 hole course as well as the 18 hole one.

It was never built as a beginners course but somewhere for members to play when the main course was being used by societies etc.

We do get a lot of beginners on the course and it can make rounds very slow A few weeks ago two of our groups walked off after just playing 9 because they could not take being behind such a group who had apparently taken nearly 30 minutes to play the 120 yard 1st hole.

Sounds like the council course I grew up playing in Coatbridge. At one point they had to stop under 16's going out without an adult as they were getting their golf clubs and even golf shoes nicked off some of the locals on the holes that go into the woods.

As much as I like to see a 9 hole course, I think decent pitch and putt courses are what generally gets youngsters and non players into the game.

Southwold is lovely, some quirky holes and the 2nd loop has a different set of tees which makes it fun.

Sunningdale Heath is delightful, same landscape as the big neighbour at a fraction of the cost.
