I am currently planning a golf trip which will have Edingbrough as the base location.

Looking for 2 to 3 courses to play while we are there for under £100 in the summer season which gives the fun, experience and views of playing Scottish golf courses without breaking the bank. 20+ handicapped.

So far I have found

  • Braid hills - nice views of Edinburgh from what I have read
  • Kilspindie Golf Club - £100
  • Gullane Golf Club - no 2 and 3 - £100 under depending on the day/time. Which course would be more fun if you had to pick?
  • The Glen Golf Club £100 and under
  • Kings Arce - not sure on this one but look to be under £50 a tee time
  • Bruntsfield Links Short Hole Golf Course - free - might be worth playing for fun?

Not set on any of these and open to any ideas and recommendations. If any of those are good ones which should we play?

Appreciate any help!

Thank you

I played Braid Hills a few years ago. Huge surprise, a very happy one. Nice views, quirky holes, excellent condition. I haven't played it recently but 2 out of 3 of those attributes definitely won't have changed.

If someone suggested playing there again I'd happily say yes.

I can't comment on the other courses.

Get some history - Musselburgh Old Links. Under £30 for an Open Championship course.

West Linton is a bit outside Edinburgh and a nice course.

Braids is a cracker.

If you want a links course for tradition. Anstruther is a bit away but a pleasant place and a very good nine holer.

Check out https://www.greenfree.co.uk/ for 2-4-1 vouchers. Gullane 2 and 3 are on there, but only Mon-Wed. Prestonfield is also on there which I believe is a decent course

Dalmahoy sometimes have decent deals if you stay there - they have 2 courses and a hotel. Dalmahoy East was a European Tour course back in the day.

Would second Musselburgh Old Links which Brammall Mac suggested above. Everyone will be delighted when you tell them you've booked an Open Championship Course!!

I would not describe the Braids as a cracker. Can’t complain about the price or the views but that’s it for me.

The Braids is my home course. Impressive views over Edinburgh and out to East Lothian as well as the Ochils, Pentland Hills etc.

Not long but as the name suggests, pretty hilly. Not a polished set up (although seems to be improving) and in my opinion has a rugged charm to it. At least feels that way given its still within the city. This video makes it look great, i think. The other flatter parkland course in there is Silverknowes.

Definitely try and make kilspindie one and although all Gullane’s are lovely, I’d go for 2 before 3.

Agree with that. Kilspindie is a superb course and G2 is every bit as good as G1.
Having said that G3 is still lovely.
Longniddry is worth a look to add to your list. Not really a links, but having no par 5s holes without being short makes it different.

In Edinburgh, both Murrayfield and Mortonhall offer lovely views and should be in good condition in summer.

The Glenn, Pebble Beach without the inland holes. I'd go back tomorrow.

And, as mentioned above, you should add West Linton to your list.

The Glen is a must. Great value.

Gullane 2 is a bargain if you can get it at under £100 in the Summer.

Kilspindie not worth a ton.

Thats the only three I have played, but if you can get Craigielaw at double figures, grab it.

Duddingston is the best course I’ve played in Edingburgh and very close to city Centre and next to Prestonfield which is ok and has good views of Arthur’s seat, both under £50 last time I played.

For a real fun course I would go across to Aberdour about 30 mins from city Centre and was about £40 last time a played , (3 years ago)

The Glen is nowhere near the quality of Kilspindie and it is now close to £100 a round.

Yes, the Glen has some great holes and the best views in East Lothian. A few poor holes, especially the 1st.
That hill up to the first green is a killer if you’re pushing a trolley, which I was. Nice course but tough as it was blowing a gale.

We also played Royal Musselburgh for £25 through the Braid Society, enjoyable course with a bit of history. From memory, we paid £40 for The Glen and £60 for Dunbar, also through The Braid Society, that was 4 or 5 years ago right enough.

Yeah the Glen is lovely too, prices everywhere are ridiculous nowadays. Ten years ago could’ve got the majority of all these mentioned for comfortably under 100quid

Morton Hall was quite enjoyable when we played it a couple of years ago, not very long and not tight. Bruntsfield was a disappointment, we played it as the same course designers was about to do our course (Nairn) so we got a flavor of what was to come . Bunkers blocking fairways off to straight hitters and long hitters having a much easier course. 12 of us played none thought it had been improved or enjoyed it apart from the guy that got a lucky HIO.
Gullane 2 is as good as 1 IMO and 3 was good. Im surprised you you can get Kilspinie for £100 if you can def play that

I'm from Edinburgh and played most courses.

I wouldn't go near Braid Hills, it's a marmite course. People seem to love it and I just can't understand why.

If links is your thing East Lothian has an abundance of options.

In Edinburgh it's self I'd look at Duddingston and Bruntsfield. Those two and Burgess and Mortonhall are probably the ones that fight it out for best course in Edinburgh by most people's reckoning.

For me Duddingston is the best course. I joined it for that reason and was a member there for 4 years. Never once was bored by the course.

Dalmahoy East is great too, avoid West.

Happy to be messaged if you want advice.
