We could do with more 9 hole courses in England!

I was chatting to my apprentice on this week about how the number of pitch and putt courses has diminished over the years - there used to be 4 or 5 within about a 8 mile radius of where I live - they were fantastic places to go when you were pretty raw - I'd love to see more of those facilities popping up.

As for 9 hole courses that play at a decent length - there's a few near us that are decent - Crow Nest probably the pick. Don't think I could be a member at a 9 holer though, I like a course that has plenty of variety and I'm not sure a 9 hole course played twice would satisfy that for me.

Blairgowrie's Wee Course is a true gem and certainly not a pitch and putt course. Part of the original Rosemount layout, it is a course which teaches course management and strategy. Well worth a visit.
for me the best 9 hole course ive every played, IMO best in scotland

59 years ago I loved playing Dorking.
Great finishing hole up the hill to a charming old clubhouse

Probably a 7000 yard monster now with a weddings venue style clubhouse.

Just checked, thankfully still the same.

I've played Dorking. Hated it! Absolute nightmare! A couple of those holes were borderline impossible. I did play it on a muddy, rainy day to be fair - barely made it up some of the hills mountains.

Sitting on the chairs in front of the club house with a few beers watching golfers on a warm sunny day struggle up to the big split level 9/18th green was always very enjoyable.😲

i think there is a lack of 9 hole courses full stop. there used to be lots in the highlands but they all became 18 holers.
Dunked & Birnam was a fab 9-holer. As an 18 holer (now simply Dunkeld GC) it’s still very lovely and challenging, but just a bit less ‘concentrated’ in its delights (if you get my drift).

In NE Derbyshire I’ll fly a flag for Stanedge GC just outside of Chesterfield up high on the edge of the Peak District moors. A cracking friendly little club and 9-holer (it’s actually got ten holes for a change of 7th hole 2nd time round). Bakewell is fun but def one ‘where one leg longer than the other’ could be a help 🤣

Down my way the only 9-holer I’ve play is Alton GC…and it is a lovely track.

The local par 3 9 holer to me is fun - designed by Henry Cotton, but it’s a par 3 course so doesn’t count.

I think the big advantage of nine-holers, for the green fee paying player especially, is that they’ll never be charging ‘stupid’ greens fees as they won’t be attracting overseas tourist golfers.
