Tell the truth about your driver distances....

I honestly couldn't tell you my average drive, as the difference between drives is just to unpredictable. I can knock it out there when I'm playing well and have hit the 300+ a few times this year (several times at Delamere, inc one that was GPS'd at 350 yards, but the wind was impressive to say the least). What I do know is that if I have to carry the ball more than 240, I look to lay up. If the carry is 220 and I'm not playing well, then I lay up.

Oh, and although I was driving the ball really well at Delamere, every time I looked back from the green, Junior's ball was 10 yards further up the fairway than mine had been. That guy hits it long and very straight....:)

So if it's not your Driving (Driver or 3-Wood) then just exactly what's keeping you at 16?

A question that could be directed at many on these posts. It never ceases to amaze me how many people average 250-300yds with a driver and play off 16+ h'caps  If you have a swing good enough to hit the ball that far and straight then it simply isn't possible to be that bad at the rest of the game IMHO

I guess I average around 225yds to 240yds, anything longer is a bonus.
However, anything on the fairway is a bonus!
I once drove a 310yds par four .............. but that was a very long time ago when I was much younger, much stronger and much, much bendier!

Slime.

There is a difference between driving far and driving well. I can count the times I am on the fairway with the driver on the fingers of one finger..
Shot 79 and 79 last two times out so 17 handicap is not indicative of my ability. Not enough qualifiers...

Yes it is. The tee shots don't always go that far, or straight. Iron play, chipping, putting and course management can also be weak....

... just take PNWokingham as an example.....

He needs to swing faster!

@Hawkeye

That distance is not all that good if you consider 200-210yds as an absolutely essential distance off the tee - for par 4/5s and no 'special circumstances' like water placing limits.

230-240 still places considerable pressure on most 2nd shots whether it's from the fairway or semi, let alone 2nd cut! I tend to only hit about half a dozen Greens in Regulation even when playing to my 9! To me, it shows how important the short game really is - though, with my dodgy short game, increasing GIR count is my best way to improve the numbers on any day, if not in general! I'm often 5 or more shots better off Yellows than off Whites, even though SSS is often only 2 different . Bigger hitting Cat 2/4 guys tend to much closer to the SSS difference, irrespective of their actual handicap imo.

According to the launch monitor at my Ping fitting the carry averaged 229. About what I thought and possibly I have bumped it up by 10 yards or so with the new driver compared to what I was getting with the TM Burner. To be honest short and straight does me

I agree. hitting 260 off the tee leaves nothing more than a short iron in to most courses around the 6000 yard mark. ive hit a couple of 260 drives in the last two days and it was a pw left.

That's the point though JO, if your tee shots aren't going that far or straight, you aren't averaging between 250-300yds. Your best might be that far, but it isn't your average.

I think the correct stat for a 9 h/capper is 5 greens in regulation so you're doing OK there :D:D LOL

Oh, yes. I know that's about right.

My point, badly made, was that 230-240 generally still leaves a long shot to the green. Another 20 yards or more generally means 2 clubs less into it. I'm certainly more confident of getting and staying a green with a 6-iron rather than a Rescue - or a 7 vs 5-iron! That would probably equate to 3 more GIRs and 1, maybe 2 shots less!

And those really are my averages. I'm pretty boringly that distance and rarely in trouble off the tee. It's the next shot tha's more difficult when you are short!

Average distance? Haven't a clue!
I do know that there's three holes at my place where burns run across the fairway at 210 yards. I know with a decent strike I'll clear them comfortably, so probably 220/230 carry.
Average will be a lot less than this when factoring in the slices, hooks and downright duffs.
I'm not anal enough to keep stats so it really comes down to...
Good drive
OK drive
Bad drive
Really bad drive :(

Going on today at a rock hard freshly cut course my 3 hybrid ran out to 275 on 4 occasions and the driver went 290-316 (5 times) the other shots probably bring ought the average back to about 245 driver and 230 with a hybrid - should really tell me something...

So I'm a liar then?
