Tell the truth about your driver distances....

From my experience over the years most golfers dont drive much over 200 yards, good golfers hit around 240 and very good golfers around 260. There is always the odd Gorilla that can put it out around 280/300 but normally with poor direction.

Most of the distances quoted here are either fabricated or imagined. It makes me smile the number of people that claim to be hitting Tour Pro distances.

I must say that even though I agree with most of this I rarely see even a high handicapper fail to clear 200 yards. I've heard some people guess some very strange distances they think they have achieved but 200 yards is very short with the big stick. Saying that though me and most of the people I play with are big lads who hit the gym often so power isn't really a issue for us and a good swing does result in long distances for us and are always measured with the S3 if we think we have hit a long un. My season best is 312 so I'm still not blagging stupid distances like 350+ although Hovis who is a member on here hit a 350 yarder the other day on the Brab... with a little help from a cart path

Interesting that no one quotes their average driver distance from probably the most accurate source of info, a launch monitor set up by a proper pro fitter. Spend enough time on this and you'll get your average, without wind, without silly bounces, inflated opinions, etc.

;)

I did :ears:

I have had a couple of sessions with our pro on the launch monitor, one specifically to measure club distances, discounting best and worst, each club measured with average of three well struck shots. My driver distance including roll out 247 yards.

This is probably the wrong time of year to be discussing this. There is a ditch on our 18th about 260yds from the tee. In 2 and half years I have driven into it twice. Yesterday I played my second shot from the other side of the ditch - and I hit it there with my 3W! I have no idea how many times it bounced before it got there, it might even have rolled through the ditch I don't know, but what I do know is that that isn't normal, I'd be happy getting it that far with my driver.

I agree with that in part, but, you will still scramble a good few pars and even birdies being so close with a long drive so the rest of the game then has to really stink  ;)

I played against 2 Cat1's the other day, one of them was driving in excess of 300yds all of the time, he drove a few par 4's (320 & 342) and should have cleaned me out, but, he didn't! Why, because he flopped his chips, 3 putted a few times and really showed he had no confidence in his short game. His driver was his best club in the bag, but, as I'm constantly told, 70% of the game is played inside 100yds ;) He would have still shot around 79 possibly 80 due to his huge consistent drives which was not good for him, but it kept the door well open for me ;)

After being in that company and seeing that match play out the way it did, long drives will no longer intimidate me nor will I try to keep up, I'll let my short game do the talking ;)

Yes, his short game sounds like an issue.

I'd say that his course management is a bigger problem if he keeps hitting bombs to leave him with these chips that he is struggling with.

Spot on:thup: some of the claims are frankly laughable.

Exactly, I'm having this conversation in a PM with someone currently explaining where I have improved my game from leaving full shots into the green rather than taking the biggest club knowing your not going to make it, possibly then finding a hazard or leaving an awkward chip. Those full shot approaches can leave me also closer to the pin for a single put rather than it being anywhere on the green like a lottery with a 3 put looming.

Its took a while but plotting your way around the course is also far more enjoyable than just taking the biggest club possible on 2nd shots and getting into trouble, well its working for me anyway ;)

I hit a 280 yard 3 wood onto a par 5 green yesterday. Hope this is of interest....

I don't have a driver, so I use a 3 wood. Only time I've measured it is when I'm on the range, its 200 yards long and I hit the fence (near the bottom). So around 200 yard carry for me. Not sure if that's good or bad but I'm more than happy with it.

Small fry! ;)

In the golden days of Guildford Golf Club, I hit the par 5 8th with my second...a putter! About 250 yards. In those days, the fairway was cut very close, rock hard and all down hill to the green. :D

Glad I started this thread... I see a lot of people being honest and a lot with the same old BS.... but hey, if you need to big yourself up on an Internet forum then so be it.

As for my driving. ... I had 3 drives today that edged just over the 270 mark (finish). Over the moon!

I assume you're being ironic?

i hit my 3 wood 280 once, just because im a 26 hcaper doesnt mean i dont have the ability to hit a long shot on occasion!

No-one said it does, it's the averages that people are questioning. I played with a 22 h'capper the other week. He had the ability to hit his driver an absolute mile. On one hole he must have hit approaching 300yds, it can be done. His average however was closer to 200yds, it was hard to measure as the ball was always in the clag.
