I went today to PXG London South for the driver fitting that I bought in the H4H auction. Came away with mixed feelings....

To get straight to the point, I haven't come away specced for a new driver.

After a brief discussion about what my miss was etc, I hit a few shots with my current driver. They were either solid shots that I would be happy with on the course, or a bit leaky right. I was having real trouble finding the middle of the club face consistently, which has been my problem recently.

Unfortunately, the same happened with every combination he fit me into. Heavier, lighter, shorter shafts all came and went and the result was the same. What I did find was that, while I was suffering with a heely strike, the consistency of strike points with the stiffer shafts he was fitting me into was much better. But everything was either straight then right, or starting right and going further right. I just could NOT hit anything left, even if I tried my absolute hardest.

What was interesting to see was my numbers, which I'd never seen before with driver. The miss was caused not by super high spin but by super high launch, caused my my lower body firing too quickly and getting stuck under the ball, which meant a high push. I have an attack angle of about 8 degrees up, and a low point about 8 inches before the ball. I tried everything, from standing further to the ball, closer, taller, but every time my swing won out - I was never going to change it in the 90 minutes I was in there.

The fitting became more of a lesson, and what was really annoying was I could understand what he was trying to tell me, and I'd felt good swings on the course before, but today I just couldn't get my body to put it into practice.

In the end, I think I hit ONE ball that out-performed my current driver, but it outperformed it by some distance, so I do think that it is in there somewhere and I just have to harness it.

It's frustrating for a few reasons:

1) I had a 2 hour drive to get there
2) I did feel a little frustrated that I wasn't just fit FOR my swing - i felt like a lower loft/closed head would have helped, but maybe the club couldn't be closed more, I don't know
3) It means that the conscious effort I've put into practicing hitting up on the ball has led to me going too far the other way and now I'm going to have to work on bringing it back down

However, on the flip side:

1) I'm glad I wasn't just fit for the sake of it
2) I now have my number and know what to work on
3) I'm grateful for the patience shown and the non-pushy sales from the fitter
4) They made a good cup of tea

I'm told that it happens reasonably often that people go away and come back another day - but the guy's mouth dropped open at the end as I was about to leave when I said I'd travelled from north of Cambridge

Anyone else had similar experiences that can make me feel a bit better?

So what happens now, given that you effectively already paid for a driver? 🤔

A couple of years ago, I heard all the talk about Orka irons and their fittings, so I went for a fitting with them. That was about a 50 minute drive to their HQ I think. I then had the worst swing day imaginable, shanking 40% of them, knifing it, you name it. After about 15 minutes of the hour I asked was there really any point in continuing, and he said, "honestly, no not really". Thankfully he didn't charge me for the fitting which was really nice of him, he said just come back another day. Obviously I never returned because it was too embarrassing.

I still have the voucher, so I'll go back at a later date. It just wasn't my day, I think. Didn't feel comfortable over anything, was RIDICULOUSLY hot in the room (he went to check the air con after about 45 minutes and it was set to 26) and the worse I was swinging, the less likely I was to get a good strike.

I can already see what'll happen - I'll go to the range this week and start striking the ball much better without knowing what I'm doing differently

It happens and a good fitter will never push a fit that isn't right. I would perhaps suggest a driver lesson and get the launch angle and strike sorted so you are more consistent on the course and at the fitting

Sounds about right for people who try to think of air con as normal heating! Took awhile to explain to my wife that 20 degree on it would be fine. It is direct heat rather than heating the walls etc. no wonder you got hot. Especially with the movement for golf

After my first lesson on the SIM I started going in shorts in mid winter as I get why the pro wants the air con in heat as he isn't moving..I'd rather have it on cool still

Could it be that the pxg just isn’t for you?
I think in this case, it was the archer rather than the arrows. I'm not expecting any driver to magically make me 20 yards longer, but this was just mental. I did hit plenty of bad ones with my own driver as well

That's a decent write up. While I understand your frustrations, it seems to me that you were treated extremely well by the fitter, so in a way you had an extremely good fitting experience!

Obviously, anecdote isn't data, but I suspect that most recreational golfers (nothing personal, I'm very much in this bucket) would improve by far more by spending the money on decent lessons than in fitting sessions and new kit. And there's a whole industry of fitters and manufacturers who are very happy to indulge their fancies...

Hard to write the PXG off though if you aren't swinging well. You could have hot TM, Titleist, Ping et al and if you aren't making a good swing nothing is going to make a difference. Once you get your swing back (and a climate where you aren't roasting after every shot) try again.

Was one of the problems the fact you could see your numbers and were (subconsciously) trying to hit it harder/further? I know when I have been near a launch monitor I really have to force myself to use my normal swing and not try too hard.

I always tell the fitter I don't want to see my numbers or what shaft they are fitting and I will feed back if I think the shaft is too light/heavy and whether the flight is too low/high although we'll talk about the launch angle and characteristics of a shaft without him saying what it is. At the end we'll look at the one that we think is the best fit and compare to my base set of shots with my clubs. We'll have a look at any others that I really liked and if it is close have a discussion. Has worked really well (apart from the last Ping guy who forgot to email the data to me and my pro as requested so I had the information to make an order on)

Yeah exactly this. I have to go for it now anyway, and when I look back at the optimiser numbers, it really seems like ball striking and therefore smash factor is the bit I was losing out on. Close club face, more toe strike is going to result in more ball speed and a straighter shot, both things I was lacking.

I'll give it 4/6 weeks and make the trip back

This is also a good point. I suppose it's a possibility 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'll bear it in mind next time

I think you would benefit from a lesson with your driver and try to work on that for 6 weeks or so to build a more repeatable swing. When you go back you'll be a lot more comfortable.

Alternatively just sell the voucher on and put it down as a bad experiment.

I once went back to Ping Gainsboro for a fitting for some new irons. I got my current ones from there. Bottom line, my swing that day was atrocious. It didn’t help that there was a massive wind blowing straight into my face. I just got no distance at all. The flippin ball was going all over the place apart from where I wanted it to. The fitter to be honest was fantastic and there was no pressure to buy. I didn’t. I came away gutted.

Don't you do indoor sim fitting in the UK?
I'm sure that you must to some extent.

A good reason to be fit by a PGA professional as when our swing is way off it can be difficult to accurately fit a club. A good fitter will be able to settle that before making any decisions on specs. Reminds me of a fitting a friend had with one of the worlds most experienced fitters He was a scratch golfer and was hitting everything way right with his current club as they looked to get some baseline numbers. Sensing his frustration The fitter took his club adjusted it and opened the face as much as it could be and gave him
It back. The result ? He started hitting everything straight as he had merely gotten very lazy with his hands and the fitter opening the face and telling him so got him swinging well. He then had a wonderful fitting session.

A good fitter would have been able to have factored in the wind if it was affecting distances outside. Usually Ping will fit indoors (or have when I've been there) if the weather is rubbish and maybe go outside just to assess real time ball flight

My recent fittings had the best of both worlds - inside and out.

In a 'fitting studio' with all the gear, albeit hitting onto a range, with markers etc. Only difference to outside was the mat.

Once the fitting was advanced enough, simply step outside and hit off turf, to ensure all the key metrics worked in real life.

No fitting gets you out on a proper course, which is when everything can change - that would work, but after club choice, some will work with you to fine tune, even swap things over.

I am due back in a couple of weeks post fitting for a gapping session, as I still have a few options at the top and bottom of my bag.
