Old Man Yardages

But looking at it, the chrome soft looks like a candidate for me to try. I had issues with Chrome Tour was spinning up on me. Triad was doing the same thing. Today I used AD333 and that didn’t balloon up so I will investigate further.

All very well knowing yardages but then you factor in temperature, wind, rain, elevation and slope..

That 150 carry you think you have could end up being anything between 100-200

Sorry ball 4 … ball 3 is too low spin for the driver and could be worse on course. At your speed you need possibly more spin on average.
Well...we wrapped up ball 4 earlier as a bit of a ringer. :ROFLMAO:

As for ball 3 and its low spin....i dont think more spin will help....I would agree that the spin is low if my launch was around 13 or 14 degrees...but at around 16-18 degrees do I really need more spin?.....indeed the Ping chart shown in post #146 would indicate otherwise....for a ball speed of 120mph with an Angle of attack of 4 degrees, it indicates an ideal launch of 17.4 degrees and 2300 rpm to achieve a carry of 200yds....which is as near as damn it what I'm achieving with ball 3...the Chrome Soft (ball speed 122, spin 2392, launch 18.9, AoA 4 degrees. The Flightscope launch optimiser says much the same. Yes the ball might fly higher with more spin but carry and roll will be reduced....

But you have to have a baseline to start from...you have to trust the gapping of your clubs....if you don't have that base then everything else you can just forget about.

For me this all started with trying to build an effective transition from my irons into woods and deciding where that transition needed to start.

How was it on the short game? (Chrome soft)

Your latest table shows no real difference between the real balls when hit with the driver...2 yards carry...you're not going to notice that on the course.
Personally I'd work from the green backwards
Find balls you like to chip and putt with, discard the rest
Move to 120 yards and find balls you like hitting into greens..discard the rest
Then go to the tee and see which one you prefer...there's your ball.
That's my take...appreciate yours may differ.

I like it...nice muted feeling off the wedges and putter. Difficult to gauge spin and the like around the greens due to the soft conditions. i've used the Chrome soft on and off over the years since it was originally introduced....the only truly bad version was the one where they introduced the "graphene" layer....I had some truly awful experiences with that version....but if memory serves me correctly Callaway were also having ball manufacturing consistency issues around that time.

I dont like a hard clicky ball and nor do I like things that mimic rubber balls ,like say the Callaway Supersoft, which when I tried it a few years ago seemed to have a life of its own on the greens.

All in all though...yeah I'm a long term fan.

That table is from the Flightscope Trajectory Optimiser webpage where you can put in your ball dynamics (ball speed, launch angle, spin) and it will give you your calculated yardage and roll etc. I was using it as an example to show that increasing spin, with my set launch conditions, didn't give me any additional yardage....quite the opposite in fact. The table does not show "real" data from me hitting the ball!!!

Whilst I generally agree with your sentiments above, my data from yesterday posted in the evening (#163) shows a definite advantage to using ball 3 (Chrome Soft) with the 7 iron...and a slight benefit with the driver...Ball 1 (Chrome Tour X) isnt far behind. Luckily I like how the Chrome Soft feels on and around the greens....not that the Tour X is unpleasant....I certainly think that my ball of choice going forward for the year is likely to be one of these. It certainly wont be the Wilson Triad (ball 5) which I used for a lot of last year.
