Shot tracking systems/watches/tags

They can be decent listens Lou the Arccos stats database nerd will give Greg Chalmers (player on the pga senior tour) and Mark (annoying to the extreme but a great teaching pro) a question think the last one was what’s the median driver distance for 5,10 and 25 capper then they discuss
See that actually sounds interesting and worth a listen to might give that a go tomorrow.

I have never got too hung up about knowing carry distances to be honest. If you know your carry distance then you still need to guesstimate the role out. Pretty much creating the same amount of uncertainty that using total distances incorporates.

Roll out can vary massively depending on course conditions and course type. It might be easier on a wet parkland course where shots stop pretty much dead, but on a links course it might be much harder to gauge.

Total distances shown by shot tracking gives me enough. Calculating carry distance for every club would require quite a few hours on a simulator, and even then the impact of wind/elevation etc needs to be factored in. Im not that good enough for it to worry me not knowing precise carry distances.

How do you cope with shots over water? Most balls I have don't roll too well on water - although a few do try skipping over a few times ;)

Hi,

I currently use hole19 for tracking my score and giving yardages, I find it a bit of a faff to use it to track data, ie, which club I used and all that malarkey because it’s manual and I forget to do it until I’m ready to hit my next shot!

I’m thinking of trying one of those watch systems that come with tags you attach to each club, and the shot is tracked automatically. Specifically looking at the shot scope v5.

Anyone else been using it and have any opinions/reviews? And is there anything better for a similar price?
My old Shot Scope V3 is in perfect working order, with all the tags... somewhere. If I can dig it out I might list it for sale in the sales section if you're interested.

Thanks mate, I’ve got my eye on the newer version now but appreciate the offer.

Generally play links golf up here, not much water - one pond on our course and you are hitting driver over that :p

If I was playing a par 3 over water I'd be taking my club that hits the middle of the green. With a mid iron or less, my carry isn't that much less than my total unless the green is rock hard. Works for me, but I appreciate some might want to know and use carry distances.

I have come to realise I was thinking too much about precise yardage to a flag and carry and that that was causing me problems my skill level doesn’t need. I am simply not good (consistent) enough with my striking of irons from say 130yds and out.

I am nowadays thinking more that if the flag is on the front of a green I play the club I feel comfortable with that'll get me a decent bit past the flag…I don’t bother too much about quite how far as long as I’m on the green. Same for a flag at the back…get it on the green short of the flag. In fact the important yardage for me should be that to middle of the green and ignore yardage to the flag. Once I’ve decided the club to use I focus more on my set up and alignment and forget yardage.

Wedges distance and closer I pay more attention to yardage and carry. Shot tagging…maybe when I get my ball striking more consistent…and I can get that from work on the range.

I’ve a shot scope x5 watch with tags and I’ve fallen out of love with it. Over time it’s gone from capturing about 90% of my shots first time to about 50% capture, which seems pointless. I’ve recently bought garmin s70 watch as a replacement but not gone for tags. If anyone wants a second hand cheap x5…….

I don’t know whether something changed in my grip etc or why it started picking up less shots

Having used used shot scope, arcoss and garmin S70 approach on course my opinion would be…

If you just want to get an idea of distances the garmin watch will show you how far you’ve hit your last shot. Generally its functions are outstanding around the course. Especially plays like distances. I only use my laser now for wedge distances.

If you want to get into the detail more post round, arcoss is massively better than shot scope. I just didn’t get enough out of the shotscope insights in comparison to arcoss and had tons more unregistered shots. Arcoss is way more costly though but the insights can help you really prioritise what you need to practice to get to the next level.

With all of these systems the number one issue for a lot of people is distance off the tee so unless you are going to hit the gym and do some additional speed training, I try to be much better in all other categories outside driver.
