Random Irritations

Watched a couple of "woodworking" videos on Youtube from creators in Vietnam and Cambodia and they are beyond belief.

Based around this "turn pallet wood in to a beautiful... blah, blah!" trend and they are just bonkers. No safety gear, sanding pallets (often dipped in a chemical soup to protect them) with a blue face mask (the Covid type) and spray painting with no mask at all...

And don't get me started on the table saw techniques, how they still have 10 fingers is just down to pure luck surely. Making 20-30mm cuts without a push stick, running tenon cheek cuts free hand (with the stock upright and no support) just asking for kickback (if you want a proper holy crap moment, watch some of the table saw kick back vids on YT).

The worst part of it all is, the results are rough as.. well, you know the next word starting with F, and there are people watching these saying stuff like "I don't have these skill but you make it look easy so I might give it a go...". Basically impressionable folk watching downright dangerous stuff.

The bit that blows my mind is that these guys are working with shops full of expensive machinery so they have zero excuse for not having proper PPE and also for not turning out quality product.

I get that this truly is a random irritation but I was genuinely gob-smacked watching these and really worry people will copy this nonsense.

Whatever you do, don't try and create kickback on purpose

Absolutely not. I've watched that vid and a few from Lincoln St Works and Bourbonmoth where they replicate kickback and it's insane. Luckily I always stay to the left of the blade, always use a Gripper block and/or push stick and always, ALWAYS use the thin rip fence with a featherboard when cutting less than 30mm strips.

Oh, and never crosscut along the length of the rip fence, always use a stop block and a mitre gauge.

Websites with filters that don't work. I was looking at the Druids site, strong sale on now, and put in the size that fits. I then check out out what's left and discover the first 3 items I looked at don't have my size in stock. I gave up 🙄

Similarly Amazon where you put a maximum price and it shows the item within the range, yet when you click on it 99% of the sizes and colours are way more expensive.

Vrbo and greedy cottage owners… Thought we had found a nice holiday cottage for next July, 2 weeks in Devon, sleeps 5, top of our budget at £3000. With Vrbo you have to contact the owner and they have 24Hrs to respond, so we did just that. Owner responds after the 24Hrs “Sorry we are putting it up next year by £104 per night, do you want it at £4456?” 🤬

Hotel in Spain we have a reservation with through Booking.com for 2nd week in October had a 30day no charge cancellation policy. We missed that when we booked it as most are a week or less.

As my MiL is in hospital and not in a good place we tried to cancel on day 29 to go but they still took our full payment. Trying to get it back they possibly will if I provide a good medical reason (which we think we’ve got) - and I’m working on that (a subject of a separate irritation).

I’ve offered to cancel to give the hotel time to get another booking for our room, but Booking.com advise that if I do that it is much harder to get the refund. Rather bonkers if you ask me…but if thats the hotel and Booking.com policy 🤷‍♂️.

Washing machine

Decided to have a wobbly couple days ago saying the door wouldn't lock, turning off for 5 mins and back on "fixed it"

Same again today so new one ordered

To be fair it's 6 years old and goes on 10 times a week so it is hardly had a relaxing life

Had to rush that delivery and hope it holds up for the next couple washes or we will get a back log 😂

Surely worth a repair first?

Surely worth a repair first?

I've repaired it once for something else , and a repair takes say 5 days depending on parts to order

New one will be here tomorrow

If was just us then 100%

However needs must. If it stops after this cycle we will be 2 washes behind even before the new one arrives at 12 tomorrow.

Plus I've had this before with intermittent faults, it will be working fine for the repair guy , so can't fix what's not broken at the time

The previous owners 8 years ago left us the dishwasher (wasn't brand new so prob 10 years old) a washing machine (not this one that proper broke 6 year back .. and a tumble which broke about 5 years ago

Just looking at this and the massive freezer they left as please last a couple more years guys 😆

Yeah I know the feeling, when my 3 were young the washing machine was on all the time it seemed and any problems where a big deal. We had to try the local laundry once 😂. Now though the youngest has gone to uni and it's eerily quiet with just Mr and Mrs paddyjk at home. Enjoy the chaos while it lasts😂

On a cruise and using the ships free wifi. Most sites load fine but the GM forum is painfully slow to load - must be a ploy to get me to upgrade to the premium service

Depends who looks at it

Poured a lovely ultra clear resin in to a large void in a walnut slab on Saturday. Was tacking up nicely yesterday, micro dust extractors running full tilt to keep the workshop and the resin dust free...

Go out to check on it this morning and a fly has landed on the tacky resin and got itself stuck! That's going to set me back a day or two fixing that. Bloody flies.

Not as bad as yours but I decided to paint some skirting boards outside at the weekend, I didn’t consider that it would attract every flying insect known to man 🤦🏻🤣
