Random Irritations

The biggest private sector business in the UK is property renting.
Working people hand over their earnings to the wealthy property owners and property-owning businesses.
Rents are too high. Property values are too high and mortgages can not be obtained and people are thus forced to rent.
This lowers the standard of living of the renters and increases the standard of living of the property owners.
This is very inefficient and wasteful. It affects millions of people directly. It has a long-term negative effect on our economy and on the lives of working people.
The craziest aspect of this is that people who have a history of demonstrating they are able to pay these extortionate rents are deemed unable to pay a similar (or lower) amount on a mortgage.
How is it fair that someone is encouraged to pay someone else's mortgage instead of their own?

Think this should be pinned at the most disgusting irritation of a lifetime.

If you can afford rent you can afford a mortgage

Why can't they afford a deposit? Because rents are too high!

The underground runs at a massive profit but it's profits are used to prop up less profitable parts of TFL IE the buses. The second biggest income is from roads (not including ulez) which adds in.

All profits of TFL are reinvested into the network for improvements which is how public services should be run

Ulez profits (when they happen) are ring fenced for improvements in things like electric bus routes, making TFL greener with electric supply and such. But ulez will be a loss leader as the idea is all to switch people away from the costly to run cars
I know it’s finances are not straight forward, and I couldn’t find a figure for just tube costs to just tube revenue raised (fares, advertising, property income etc)
Mind you it is the most expensive in the entire world so it should run at a profit!

That's because it's the only one that has no government subs ... Every other transport network gets a grant by the gov which reduces fares...

Funny how things work

Hold up, you said it runs at a “Massive Profit” and now you’re moaning about not getting more Government money…This conversation was about Public sector industries that contribute to the countries economy.

The underground does. TFL doesn't. All profits are used to fund projects to improve the network

All things that should be funded by central gov and for example Paris metro is state funded and has cheap fairs

You can thank your pal bojo for that one. That and his garden bridge 🤣

Maybe if TFL clamped down on the rip off (and dangerous) rickshaw drivers then people may have a bit more sympathy.

TFL has nothing to do with rickshaw drivers so I don't see your point

So nothing to do with ordinary people renting out a house, possibly inheritance, trying to build up a pension pot?
Not "nothing to with" at all. What you describe is "small fry" on the coat tails of this massive business.

A dentist I had been going to for 30 years was approaching retirement. He tried to find out who actually owned the building he rented as he was going to be handing his whole business over to a younger chap. He had been paying rent for all these years to a business registered in Jersey. After making enquiries he discovered this business was owned by a business in the British Virgin Islands. He was unable to discover who the owners of that business were.
Like I said - the property renting business is massive.
Money in the economy is sucked out and goes to private funds that can avoid paying tax. This is a huge waste of the money in our economy. It makes us poorer. Huge cost to us.
Billions of pounds of wasted money.

My point is that TFL should have something to do with them and treat them the same as taxis, licenses, insurance, etc

TfL is implementing new regulations for rickshaw drivers in London, including a licensing requirement and safety standards, to ensure passenger safety and address concerns about rip-off fares and antisocial behavior. TfL plans to have a one-year pedicab driver's license, with requirements similar to those for licensed taxi and PHV drivers, including background checks and English language skills

Will that include some form of "the knowledge". Is that still a thing for the black cab drivers. I know a mate who was doing it and getting all the runs in his head. A lot more work than I think people appreciate

Glad to hear this - although it does contradict your earlier post

The black cab tbh is an art that is outdated and not needed. All that money to study to be a cabby and learn routes when Google will tell you the routes and save you money in the "knowledge"

BLack cabs used to be only ones who could pick you up but with Uber now basically press the app and then your in it's almost the same

Tourists are the main users of them now days ,, too expensive

I think they still have their place especially at places like the main train termini. I like the ability to flag one down as well but I get the point about the knowledge being an outdated mode of giving out licences

Getting a speeding ticket for doing 35mph in a 30mph zone of a main road out of Sheffield - it was 22:45; it was a Sunday night; there was nobody about and virtually no other traffic on the road…and I had just driven down from Glasgow, dropping my lad off in Sheffield. Yes OK…I was speeding…but…just irritated…🙄

Anyway…I am not particularly consoled by my wife and son both telling me that when they got done for speeding (neither anything very serious I should add) they took the speed awareness course and found it very interesting. Yeh OK.

Seriously the speed awareness course is the most interesting thing. It's amazing what you have forgotten since you passed your test and they keep it informative rather than a telling off

Saves points

You can even do them at home via webcam

Sanctimonious bores.

I hope you’re not going to be one of those idiots who constantly complains and questions the guy running the driver awareness course. Had one of those bores about 10 years ago and it dragged the course out an extra hour or so 😴

One of those that just blames everyone else but himself for being caught , one of those that spends the whole time moaning that it’s just a money making exercise , one of those that blames the highways for the changes in speed that he didn’t get told - that sort of person you mean
