Random Irritations

I’m currently on holiday in the Azores and this morning we had an early flight to a neighbouring island, 120 miles away.
Got to the airport early, 5:45 am
Queues were awful, the signs/ boards weren’t working so we had to listen to a guy on a megaphone telling us where to go.

The staff on check in didn’t have access to computers, they had to phone someone with a list and that passenger got ticked off.

It was chaos
But having said that, we were only 40 minutes behind schedule, which is nothing.

Just glad to have got here

Just had the most wonderful meal, my taste buds are zinging 😎

Plenty of options

If the power went right now I have a car with a 64kwh battery that's 89% full. Drive it down the garage. Plug in the freezer and the fridge to said car. That will last 25 days to keep them powered

The rest of the house can tick over on the 13.5kwh house battery which has 66% battery right now will see me through easily until morning when the sun hits and it will be at 100% by noon (then can divert so excess back into the car to top that back up) because of this I have a freezer full of a food and a cooking system that works. Including a gas BBQ that if all else fails I can cook on that

Where as what will you do when your cash runs out or failing that nobody is taking it because everywhere is closed?

Light a little fire?

Funny you should ask that because I do have a log burner and about 4 tons of wood split and seasoned in my garden, I also have a generator and plenty of petrol in cans. Coupled with my cash I think I will outlast you. 😂

Anyway, let me pick up on the point you have said before that you can use your car as some kind of power bank. Explain that please because the IDBuzz we are getting has a 13A socket in it, but it’s limited to just a few hundred watts because it’s off the LV system. When I asked why it’s not got more oomph from the big battery it was explained that rectifying the 400V DC to AC and stepping it down to a usable 230V was not possible.

It seems VW has once again poorly designed their EVs , the Koreans have them , the kia has vehicle to load which can deliver 3.6kw , in the review videos they show how they can use a kettle on the move

Obviously a fridge and freezer won't use much power so that's why I would put them on it

A quick read up says my internal socket in the car itself sounds like yours , low usage but I have an adaptor that comes with the car. It plugs directly into the charge port and it gives you a socket off the battery which can provide a solid stable current for up to 80% of the battery

You may outlast me in the winter but summer I can last basically forever ..

Shops can process card payments

"Merchants can also incorporate offline options in case of a processing outage like lockbox banking or manual card imprinters. Card imprinters are typically considered an outdated payment method, but they can be a lifesaver for brick-and-mortar stores experiencing credit card issues or offline credit card systems."

Sorry to burst your bubble but what they can do and what they did are two very different things.

Life in the real world proved to be very different.

Here's a question... you suggested solar panels etc. How does Juan Pedro in his 4th floor apartment in an 8 floor apartment block with 40 apartments and a roof print of 4 apartments access solar panels?

As for your suggestion of keeping a batch of meals in the freezer, there was no electricity to keep them frozen nor electricity to cook them with.

No electricity to charge cars. No electricity to fuel pumps. No electricity for perishable food warehouses and shop fridges/freezers - some had generators, most didn't.

Real world experience...

As I said yesterday.. if the power cut for 18 right now I'd use the battery in the car to plug in the freezer Nd fridge

Whilst the house is powered by the battery that is recharged by panels. The cars can also be recharged off the panels

On apartments panels may be useless but a small battery with island capabilities would see through and protect.

But end of the day it was a one off event that's a pain but like Heathrow the other day a bit of a inconvenience not much more

Plus this doesn't prove that cash is vital, just useful in these rare situations

As Phil points out starlink is also an option for these situations, expensive but an option

You have the solution but 98%+ of the population don't.

A not insignificant number of businesses here take cash only, especially the small ones that tried to stay open.

And what power source will 98% of the population plug their Starlink router in to?

Your perfect world solution isn't credible.

It's credible it's just not viable for everyone

Thought solar was more popular in Spain anyways due to the masses of sun light and the cheaper install costs?

Think it's more respectable to the businesses that tried to remain open. They didn't have to.

I doubt we will see a grid outage like this again within the next decade so will be a distance memory the next time

As a side note I just read the BBC and this is hilarious
"My mum was counting coins to see if she had enough to buy wine from a corner shop"

Real life or death stuff that 🤣

Funny we were talking about cash yesterday then the bbc carry this article…

Warning shops could be forced to accept cash in future https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cjwvgqz3vxzo

I think the key is do not get too dependent on technology. There is nothing wrong with still using cash. The older and poorer people always prefer it.

Agreed that there is nothing wrong with taking cash. I don't agree with "cash only" but at the same time refusing cards is equally wrong. It also screams tax dodger

Quick add the poorer don't always prefer it , the banks limit their access to anything but basic banking sometimes without the ability to have a card for shops
Ironically PJ's biggest problem if the unthinkable happens is that he will be the first target of the starving masses looking for supplies.

I'm sure they can contain themselves for a few hours until power is restored. These are minor inconveniences not life changing events

You must of missed what’s happened in Spain and Portugal. No power. No tech. People without cash unable to buy food and water…. I know you like to think you are some kind of “future boy” but real life isn’t what you want it to be. And when they start dimming the sun… whatcha gonna do then Flash? 😆

Future Boy 🤣

@PJ87, new superhero name.
