Random Irritations

I think Hobbit's inability to buy food was more pressing than having power and internet.

One wonders how we'd survive if something like this went on for days or weeks. I suspect societal collapse could happen pretty quickly once desperate people begin raiding shops for essentials. The most important thing to acquire might be a shotgun.

Thats easily fixed by stocking up the freezer and keeping some spare meals in the house . He said himself it's because of the move that he hadn't so won't happen again

Said it loads of times. Cash is king.

Or you need to pay for something and all the machines are down

Can’t always rely on technology

Shops can process card payments

"Merchants can also incorporate offline options in case of a processing outage like lockbox banking or manual card imprinters. Card imprinters are typically considered an outdated payment method, but they can be a lifesaver for brick-and-mortar stores experiencing credit card issues or offline credit card systems."

There's plenty of Ibex and wild boar in the hills behind me, and Hobbit has a rifle.

Cash was required for the odd corner shop that stayed open. The bigger stores closed as it was too dark towards the back of large stores, and they weren't flexible enough to manage without an electronic till.

How long is that food edible in the freezer in Spain without power ?

1 day maybe

There are many areas that if they lose internet struggle ,some are too reliant on technology and internet and I work for a company that supplies it

Oh. Yeah! So the man on tv ,who wanted (needed) to find accommodation in Lisbon but found that hotels et al were not accepting guests because they couldn’t take payment…..because they only did so by cards and couldn’t process them,- was complaining about his problem unnecessarily ?
This path to completely relying on the internet and a cashless society is time and again being shown to be foolish. As well as selfish and uncaring for those (mainly old ) people who do not embrace online banking .

My aunt (80s) once wisely said to me "I want to use a computer because people look at people who can't use a computer the same why my generation looked at people who couldn't read or write"

Cash is only useful if you have it. People couldn't get money from machines or banks. Even people who use cash don't always have a massive supply.

Most sensible people will have a supply of some notes. Hell even I have £20 or so in the house just incase

Businesses can take card payments manually. If the staff are trained is another matter.

It's not proven foolish in any way shape or form by random events like this where people are inconvenienced for a short while.

You must of missed what’s happened in Spain and Portugal. No power. No tech. People without cash unable to buy food and water…. I know you like to think you are some kind of “future boy” but real life isn’t what you want it to be. And when they start dimming the sun… whatcha gonna do then Flash? 😆

The problem isn’t one of “taking cards” it’s one of authorising payments. No communication systems mean no auth systems. Retailers aren’t going to take cards on trust for stuff like groceries and fuel etc. Electronic payment means exactly that.

There is also the small matter of PCC regulations on keeping copies of card details. You can record the card’s PAN but you can’t write down and save on paper CVV numbers, even expiry dates are a sketchy grey area.

Plenty of options

If the power went right now I have a car with a 64kwh battery that's 89% full. Drive it down the garage. Plug in the freezer and the fridge to said car. That will last 25 days to keep them powered

The rest of the house can tick over on the 13.5kwh house battery which has 66% battery right now will see me through easily until morning when the sun hits and it will be at 100% by noon (then can divert so excess back into the car to top that back up) because of this I have a freezer full of a food and a cooking system that works. Including a gas BBQ that if all else fails I can cook on that

Where as what will you do when your cash runs out or failing that nobody is taking it because everywhere is closed?

Light a little fire?
