Random Irritations

The problem is these days the house wins - even if the golf course was there before

Seen it happen to 3 golf course in the area where they have had to change things because of the houses
Even so caled posher courses like Royal Wimbledon aren't immune and a lot of the big houses lining the first insisted the course put neeting up on the right of the hole to stop errant tee shots going into back gardens.

A club near me is having all sorts of issues with complaints from a homeowner living near one of the par 3’s who claims his house is constantly under attack by errant tee shots. The club are having to go to some lengths to pacify the chap, who has taken the matter to his solicitor.

The irony is not only did he buy knowing exactly where he was moving, but he’s also a member.

Exactly - the Bedford had to change a par 4 to a 3 because of complaints - the owner took the club to court and won

Aspley Guise have had to change a hole

Dunstable Downs are having to spend a fortune moving a tee

We have two houses near our 8th green - we own one of them and the other at the moment is ok

We got the keys to the new house yesterday and moved 99% of our stuff in. Fabulous, uninterrupted view over the golf course, bowls club and out to sea.

5.45am... chug, chug, chug of the local fishing fleet!

Cling onto the positives, Bri. By midday they’ll have returned with your lunch.

Hope you’re happy in your new home.

🥂🥂

That is so sad and petty.

Yes, but think of all the dorada, lubina and chopitos they'll bring in ...

Are you near the top of the hill? Or closer down by the clubhouse?

(Ps. Am coming out at end of next month).

I could understand if he wasn’t a golfer, but to move into a house next to a course you are already a member of, and then consider taking your own club to court, really does seem like slightly bizarre behaviour.

I can’t imagine he’s the most popular player there.

Agree with the 'bizarre' bit.

But not with the 'petty' comment of others. I doubt there's anyone on here who'd be happy if they, or one of theirs, got smacked on the head with a golf ball whilst enjoying a beer in the garden ?

I totally agree. But he must have known what the likelihood was given he was a member long before he bought the house. Odds are there are a couple of his own golf balls nestling in his undergrowth!

I’m reminded of a press article a few years ago about a couple who bought a house bang slap next to the turning point used by aircraft at the end of a runway of a large UK airport, and then complained about the noise.

Just plain odd.

I agree with the fact about noise that is very obviously going to happen but it is difficult to get someone to have to put up with foreign objects flying into your garden on a regular basis.
Maybe the seller should have to ask for the buyer to sign a disclaimer before purchasing the property but I guess you would have to discount the price heavily to get it.

Does seem wrong to buy a property knowing the risks and probably adding to them over the years and then taking the club to court. Up to a point you were aware of the risks as a golfer playing that hole yourself so it seems rich to then moan about the dangers. I agree that no-one wants anyone hit by a ball but to act like that seems very strange

But it seems odd that this guy would buy there, knowing precisely that his back garden was right next to a par 3 green, not realising that there would be a problem.

I’m not sure what the current position is, but in the event it does ever wind up in the courts it’s going to be a really interesting one.

The fella is a mid teen handicap, I’m told. At some point he must have put one in his own garden!!

Going on past history the golf club will lose and it may end up costing them more

It’s prob best to find a way to get it sorted without going to court

I don’t doubt they’re working hard to seek a solution. There’s been much talk of some netting being erected but the chap says it will spoil his view.

How does a housebuilder even get permission to build there (so close) in the first place

I really don’t know, but houses next to golf courses are not uncommon.

Personally, I’d love to live next to a nice course. But I’d be aware of pitfalls like this, especially if I was already a member, and would perhaps weigh up my options before signing contracts.

It seems dft that he wants it both ways and the club have offered a viable settlement with a net and he's declined. I wonder what a judge would make of it. The club have been seen to be willing to offer a compromise. I don't know the hole but is there an option to reduce the length as a last ditch
