Random Irritations

Are all of those really on a touchscreen?

I’m surprised anything built in the last 10 years doesn’t have the ability to change radio stations or modes from controls on the steering wheel.

I find that if a car has android auto or apple car play the voice control via that works far better

"Call this person"

"Put on a podcast"

I believe they are on the Mk8 Golf. Also on Volvo's now, which is an even bigger surprise considering their safety background.

You can probably change radio channels from the steering wheel, I'd be surprised if you could not. Same as volume controls are on the wheel.

Maybe Volvo are going for the premise that people shouldn't be fannying about whilst driving and make it impossible!!

Sadly, we know that doesn't work. People will just be distracted trying to get to the right screen, whilst doing 60-70mph . What people should do and what they actually do is often quite different. The human element should be factored in.

A friend of mine has an XC40. Loves the car, hates the central touchscreen that has everything on it. Not everyone wants the ipad experience.

Does anyone work on network rail?

Back on topic, I should have used a bit of logic. Two trains “ delayed through signalling issues “

Google translate - PJ’s making tea.

Can't beat PJ tips 😜

i'm selling some camping bits as we recently sold the caravan.

given the weight and size of them i've listed them on fleabay as collection only.

so why do people ask if you can post it?

Trying to find a free article about it but the EU has told car makers to bring buttons back

That was one of the selling points of the Kia. It has haptic buttons, does the air con control and if I press another button turns the same buttons into media control .. just simple to use

Volkswagens touch controls! I have the rental VW Golf and just drove 300+ miles. Whoever thought they were a good idea? They are distracting and slow to respond so you are taking your eye off the road. Even the touchscreen is slow to react. What was actuall wrong with dials, knobs and switches?
They cost more than a touchscreen. The bean counters' sums override anything as mundane as usability or safety.

The touch screen controls are the main reason I won’t be buying any of the new BMW models. Had a courtesy car whilst mine was in for its service and even simple actions like adjusting the fan speed needs multiple screen clicks through multiple menus. Its just not safe.

Everything audio could be controlled from the steering wheel except changing source.

But, and HID’s new Merc is a good example, there are so many buttons on the steering wheel now you need to take your eye off the road to make sure you’re pressing the right one. Just moving the problem somewhere else.

Yep. I recently had a brand new BMW courtesy car while my 5-series was in for a recall. Nothing was simple or intuitive - loads of "smart" and touchscreen controls just for the sake of it.
I love tech in a car but some of us are temperature tinkerers and need it to be a one touch button or dial.
For me, they hit the sweet spot about 5 years ago with the right mix of touchscreen menus for stuff you rarely need to change and buttons or dials for the stuff you might alter a few times during a journey.

I think my current 8 series treads the balance well. The most frequent controls are buttons in easy to locate places. I think this might be the same/similar in the last gen 5 series.

My 5series is the same. Buttons or with the idrive spinny thing. The screen is touchscreen, but so far away that one would never use it.
