The counter to that is if you have a bag for overhead. Fine on Easyjet for example as you get on first, plenty of space overhead. I was on 4 BA flights recently and they ran out of overhead space on all 4 flights. People had their bags at the far end to where their seat was, some had to go in the hold, defeating the idea of the quick escape afterwards. If you don't have a bag to put up then you are 100% right. If you do, it isn't always so simple.
I remember my daughter telling me that her and her flatmates used to by end of day bargains in the supermarket. They only got food poisoning once when they took a chance on a chicken past it's use by date.
