everyone i've ever played with we have compared scores at the turn in a comp, can't see what the problem is TBH

I think people are taking this thread away from the actual issue.

It was the "I'd be happy with 1 over after 13" that is the issue, not checking scoring at the turn.

But it shouldn't be an issue should it - some golfers get upset by some random nonsense - God knows how they cope with real world problems.

I don’t like to know my score but we tally up off the 9th green. I asked if I have to and the argument was that we we disagree about an early hole at that point we remember it and there is no point thinking about the 2nd hole after the 18th.
So I don’t tally up when playing by myself but do so in competition.

I like the the humour of your previous post, but this is just nonsense.
We all know that golf is golf, forum chat is forum chat, at any given moment we can just jump in with "it's not the real world" comments, so they just aren't valid.

The whole point is about unwanted and unnecessary comments about someone else's score at random points in the round. Yes, of course it shouldn't bother us, but the bottom line is if someone has a score going, just get on with your own game and leave them to finish theirs, however it works out.
I'll withdraw the real world comments - and I agree that there's no need for anyone to comment on a fellow players score - it's not something I've ever done I don't think - but it is ridiculous that someone telling you where you stand can put you off - surely you know (at least within a shot or two) what you have shot to that point.

Yeah I guess most of us know where we are, I do exactly, all the time.
In an ideal world none of us would be put off by anything, I just think it's an unnecessary comment, that's all ?‍♂️
100% agree - to be honest unless I'm playing a match or suspect you may be cheating (only ever seen it once) then apart from marking down your score I'm not much interested in your round.

If it’s a “good mate” you should know what he likes or dislikes .
Has he ever complained before?
Most single figure players know exactly how they lie.
So seems a bit off to try to blame someone else for a innocent comment.
But some people are very easy upset, but being your good mate you should have known that.

I'll always ask if someone wants to know/check their score after nine but I suspect most players especially the better players know how they're getting on. I wouldn't say it's bad etiquette per se, just a case of knowing what your PP preferes

Surely this is not the first time you have mentioned his score? And surely he has not gone off on one before. One over after 13 is not disastrous. Someone’s looking for an excuse.
The hardest 6”on the course is between ones ears, it was his ears, not yours.

Yep he is an extremely good mate. We play away in 4 BBB Comps. and have been abroad on holidays with our wives around 8/10 times along with golf breaks in The UK. I obviously know him extremely well and is the ONLY person at our Club who I would have said anything to, a real friend for many years.

He did send me a text 1 hour later apologising for his reaction.I have learnt a lesson my action and whilst the comments on here are divided it is the last time I will pass a comment which as I said before was supportive.

Crikey, there's some precious golfers out there if you're going to implode because someone tries to Gee you up!!
You did nothing wrong as you now know.
There's a huge difference between what you said and just trying to put someone off. Intent is everything and your intent was positive.

It’s not being precious. I always know exactly what my score is but I know other players just like to play in the moment, so I respect their preference. Sometimes a player is on a run and if you make them think too much about the score you can break their rhythm.

That’s good from him to admit a bit of over reaction.
You live and learn in this game .
