Thought Homers thread was gonna refer to current day hard players, so I'll kick off so to speak....
Two that spring to mind are Charlie Adam and Alan Hutton. Both these players go in with crunching tackles and never sherk away from any trouble, certainly wouldn't like to get on the wrong side of em, think they can clearly look after themselves.
So who else in the current game can you think of ?

Well after watching Charlie Adam for a year - tough wouldnt be the phrase that comes to mind - awful - slow in the tackle , clumsy

Hutton certainly goes in strong

Terry
Skrtel
Vidic was at one stage
De Jong
Tiote
Fernando

Pin seeker, are you a Mackem cause I wouldn't class Cattermole has hard. Yes he's had loads of red cards, and I think he's more of a hinderence, but that doesn't make him hard.

Haha no I'm not mate. Tbh I'm struggling to think of many hard men in the modern game.
The refs don't allow it for a start.
Kompany got booked today for standing strong & not moving out of the attackers way:confused:

With all the physical contact now being taken from the game, apart from shirt pulling and holding at set pieces, how can any modern day player be described as tough?

When I first started to understand football, around 1960, we had a half-back line at B'ham of Watts, Smith & Neal and I subsequently learned that they did frighten the opposition.

There would be no place for players like that these days and that may be a good thing but it certainly puts into context those who are today referred to as tough.

Don't think the out and out tough guy exists anymore certainly on a European or international stage. The refs are too quick to book or send off any serious foul play and so these type of players are seen as liabilities in the modern game.

Define hard?

For me, someone who isn't afraid to put any part of their body in front of the ball, someone who can win the ball on physical strength is hard, and won't get knocked off the ball, not just someone who likes to make a crunching tackle. You could put Paul Scholes in that category, but you wouldn't think of him being hard.

Kompany certainly springs to mind. Vidic certainly when he was at United. I'm struggling to think of anyone else, but then my interest in football is slowly diminishing.
