I had a lesson today and...

after several weeks of hitting my driver all over the globe i had a lesson last night at Chelsfield lakes to try and work out what the issue was.

basically my alignment was off and i had a habit of allowing my hips to stop rotating meaning my arms took over. also the ball position was too central.

after a few drills and some changes i was hitting the ball a lot better.

i just need to keep practising the new set up
I think ball position is a thing for me with driver - but the other way around. People say position it right up in line with lead heel but I seem to hit straight pulls and slices from there, I strike it a bit better from an inch inside of that position.

i always put my high fade down to having the ball too far forward

I've been playing with this as well. I think I've been letting my shoulders open too much when striking, leading to hands getting ahead (or rather, staying ahead) of the club head and therefore dragging the handle resulting in this high, spinny slice. By putting the ball back an inch, it alleviates that a bit, but it's not really the fix. Now I try and imagine keeping my shoulders closed when hitting driver, and my miss is more left, but straight left.

The slices being SO balloon-like, and my miss now being more left, makes me think that my shaft may be too weak.

Is Matt still there ?

I've 3 hours of lessons to be booked with Martin Heggerty at Moortown golf club, been a manic start to the year, but looking forward to it 👍

2nd lesson tonight. Worked on setting the wrists straight away in the takeaway to keep the club face open in the downswing. Apparently I have a tendency to close the club face which results in the ball going left. Got a much better ball flight, high and straight. Hopefully will continue🤞

My ‘lesson’ yesterday was an oncourse rules session on taking penalty relief from Penalty Areas and free relief from GUR; areas ‘Not in Play’, and animal scrapes. Really useful that we did it on the course at one of our new Penalty Areas as, obviously, this made it real - with actual scenarios being used to illustrate, rather than just theoretical.

The member taking the session (a Surrey Referee) is going to organise a follow-up oncourse session, probably to cover rules specific to, or in the context of, bunkers. He’s doing a General Rules session in the clubhouse in a couple of weeks.

Good that the 20 member limit for the session was fully taken up, and it sounded like all of us learnt something, myself included, and some of us learned quite a lot. He was good, and encouraged us to do the online Level 1 ‘exam’ for which our golf manager is to send us all the link. I‘m def going to do that and think I might go a bit further on the ref front.

We had a European Tour referee do a rules session in the winter (can't for the life of me remember his name) and we went from tee to green with a host of different scenarios covered for each area and the nuances especially on the teeing area and greens. We spent special attention to penalty areas. Wish we had the opportunity to do it on the course but maybe a suggestion for later in the year

It was extremely useful that it was done on the course, but obviously it had to be at the end of the ’playing day’ so we started at 3:30pm (it was very gloomy when we finished 1hr20 later), though still had one pair come through. One of the guys said they’d discussed what we might be doing, and one thought they had was that we were scattering someone’s ashes…🤣

Playing lesson today at Stoneham for a bit of prep for the “Hampshire Bowl” at Blackmoor on Saturday.

Mainly looked at set up/alignment, feeling like my shoulders are closed as I was a bit open. This and some slightly tweaked alignment allowed me to turn better. More focus on width and keeping the club infront of me on the backswing had me hitting some of the best shots I can remember.

Enjoy Blackmoor. I think the greens may well be a bit lively!!

Yea, I imagine they will be. Any quick aim point tips to help me out?
Pray!!!

Other than that, use the practice green to assess the speed and get the arm bend correct (can tweak a hair once on the first or second hole as some practice greens aren't the same as the course and like any putting technique, pick a line, feel your speed and trust it. Clearly good enough to be there so play with clarity and a quiet mind and play well

Buggerlugs had his usually monthly lesson yesterday with Lee Shepherd down at Cleckheaton - quick look at his iron swing which he's tweaked a little in the last few lessons to get more power and distance. He was happy with the way Jamie has integrated the changes, he pured most of them with his best 6 iron with a maximum distance of 179 yards - very respectable for a kid of his age and stature.

He then gave him a few chipping and pitching exercises to do which I though were worthy of sharing. Ideally you'll need a launch monitor for these so a toptracer range or indoor sim would be beneficial.

The idea is you start with 50 points - and get somebody to give you a yardage to hit between 30 and 110 yards (you could use a random number generator on the phone if you're aloine). You then have to hit a shot to that distance and for every yard you are out, you lose a point - and keep going until you are 'dead'. The lad started off overhitting a 60 yard shot to 72 yards but then quickly got the hang of it and managed to get 5 shots in with 24 points still remaining - at this point we stopped to discuss the levels you'd hope to achieve - anything over 5 is reasonable, 10 is very good, and Lee said 13 was the highest he'd seen anybody achieve. I watched with interest because this is an area I really struggle in, and my initial thoughts were get hold of a launch monitor and I can do this in the garage through the winter - particularly with the shorter yardages.

Next exercise was straight forward and one we've all probably done - hit shots to 10 yard increasing then decreasing increments with all your wedges - so start at 30 yards up to 70 then back down again, then move on to the next wedge.

My years been very frustrating lesson wise

Started off well. Had a great summer. Lessons going well, golf going well

However October hits and my form and swing have drastically suffered

I had a lesson few weeks back. On lesson all fine. Striking well. At the range? Striking well. For some reason I can't take it from the range to the course.

It's all the grip aswell, I know exactly what it is but I can't seem to convinced my lead wrist to stay strong. It just goes weak and presents an open face

I txt my pro and he said try a towel under your arm pit, half swings. Well it worked. I was then smashing driver down the range

I sent him a video of my swing he told me to do something, I did and then sent him video .. all good

Next day? Back to flat swing again

I'm not a regular lesson taker, but as I've not played much recently due to the weather and it's looking like temps for a few days yet, decided to book 45mins with our assistant in the GCquad studio. He has two vital attributes as a coach - he's cheap and he's available...
My plan was to just check grip, alignment, stance etc to try and ensure that I was at least giving myself the best chance before starting the swing.
We looked at that (mostly OK) and then looked at basic iron swing to check how it looked.
I've always whipped it a little inside, and he spotted that and a shift/sway off the ball rather than a more balanced turn. Worked on tidying it up, which seemed to work.
I enjoyed it. It was nice to chat about golf with someone who was being paid to listen(!). The stuff he spotted was all basic stuff, and maybe I could have worked it out myself, but probably not. I'm thinking of popping back in a month or so once I've actually played some golf to see how it looks.
