How old is your club ?

My club/s are about 130 years old as are, as you can see on here, many others.

I think I read that this was due to the demand for golf as rail travel opened up the country around that time.

1897. Clubhouse is Georgian, the course was laid down on the houses country park which has a great number of trees from around the world.

Not sure what they've got planned, as it will be 200 years old hope its something decent, and yes i will still be a member there as they've finally sorted the course out:whoo:

My club was formed in 1817 so nearly 200 years old and has some history, the reason i ask is today is the Autumn Meeting and they play for the Gold Medal which was first played for in 1818 due to work i can't make.

So do you know the history of your club ? doe sit have any and are you interested in it , my club has a small exhibition of it in the foyer with loads of intersting facts about golf has evolved over the years

I believe my club was formed in 1938.
It's a hard testing public course on the South Downs. The 6th hole, which is SI 1 and a big dogleg, has a bomb crater from WW2. Huge thing and you have to play around it which actually forms the dogleg. It's quite a deep crater so it must have been a pretty big bomb!
I also think my club at one point held the world record for the most bunkers around a green. The 11th, it has 10 bunkers and is only a 175 yard par 3! I think it was also played in the European Tour in around the 70s. Fun facts. :)

I lol'd after reading the first two posts :D

My club is only about 30 years old.

hahaha, Despite the course being derelict for 10 years then opening, its a cracking track and getting better all the time. Lets face it with the pylons and surrounding industrial units, its never gonna win a beauty contests despite a cracking view. Greens are cracking and the fairways iv never seen holding water. Constantly working on the drainage, only downside is some of the bunkers get neglected and the roughs could be doing with getting cut back and regrown, they are impossible in places. Will be good when the clubhouse is built next year :D

Goswick was 1890 and Hirsel was 1949.

Fond memories as a 15 year old laddie of working as a 'waiter' at the Centenary Dinner and leaving drunker than 99% of the guests!

My club was formed in 1907, the original Ben Sayers course has changed a bit since then, being revamped in 1936 by James Braid. We built a new clubhouse around 2000 so we should be good to go for another good while yet. Got some very interesting trophies from the early days.

The Centenary Year in 2007-08 was something special. Lots of special events and competitions. It started with a fireworks party on the anniversary of the founding of the club and it all culminated in a Centenary Dinner that was held in a function suite at Murryfield. That was some night I'm told, I just can't remember much about it ;)
