Hedgehog Wheels

I'm a bit disappointed that Rulefan and LP didn't come back with any links to the evidence that they had seen that hedgehog wheels do less damage to the course than flat wheels.

There again, after a lot of searching, neither could I - apart from one "trial" which co-incidentally was sponsored, I believe, by Powercaddy

I would concede however that they might do less damage in heavy frost conditions (when trolleys shouldn't be used anyway imo).

Apologies - i have asked our Golf Director for the research material he has , once i have got that i will send it on

Just out of interest, a trolley and bag might weigh 30kg absolute most. Most of us probably weigh close to 90kg (I’m 110 😁), surely if the trolley is doing damage to a course it should just be closed?

And if we weigh 90 Kg and are carrying a bag of 20 Kg that makes a lot of pressure of one footprint on the ground!!!

Having taken out my GKMkll the other day I realised that the std wheels were not up to the job. I was going to pull the trigger on some Hedgehog wheels but then realised that GK no longer offer these but just offer the Hedgehog wheel covers/straps.

So whilst cheaper i not so sure about them, so have any of the GK owners on here used to covers and if so what has been your experience of them been?

Thanks for your help

Tony

Unfortunately, the Mk2 doesn’t use the same wheels as the Mk1, which had ribbed tyres that performed far better in muddy conditions. One prestigious course I occasionally play in SE London has actually banned hedgehogs except during periods of severe frost. My understanding is that this decision followed research carried out by Leftie (the OP of this thread) and presented to the course committee and head greenkeeper, showing no credible evidence that hedgehogs offer any meaningful protection to the course.

Personally, I wouldn’t spend the money.

I was lucky enough to find some on ebay. A friend's husband has bought an extra set of wheels plus the hedgehog wheel covers and screwed them into the wheels. This means they've now two sets to swap between. That's an expensive option though. I've more friends who just use the hedgehog covers and have found them fine. They've just made sure there used loads of cable ties.

Winter wheels have been used for many years at the course we have moved to and the head GK intends to keep it that way. He's not seen a detrimental effect on the fairways.

I think I have a set of GK MKII hedgehog wheels (full wheels not covers) in the garage. No longer needed as our club has changed its policy.

Drop me a DM if you're interested in taking them off my hands and I'll see if I can find them.
