Full Handicap Or Three Quarter for Bounce Games

i kind of agree with the social society and corporate events.. i played with a guy last year round Donnington Grove, he was given a handicap of 28 as it was his first time out for years and had no official handicap.. after 2 holes i had to ask him "what did you used to play off?" as he could obviously play golf!!

To my bewilderment, the guy admitted he used to play off of 9, but hadn't played for 2 years so thought it was OK to accept a handicap of 28! no surprise, he won with 52 points with numerous 4 and 5 point holes. that was the last time i played with that Society..

I know it shouldn't but the term bandit really winds me up.
I'am a pretty good striker of a ball, not overly long but straight. Everytime i play with people who haven't played with me before my hc is questioned with the usual "jokes" of banditry.
The point i'am trying to make is there is more to this game than the ability to hit a ball. Not a comment is made when i 3 putt from 4ft. Yet if i drive the ball 230 yrd straight down the middle of the next faiway up come the calls of bandit/false hc etc:
There is a reason my hc is high, its because my short game is pants. I play in every comp, every Saturday, if my hc was wrong i would of been found out by now.
I'am not saying hc cheats are not out there. They are, and often found in these national comps with great prizes. But, if i may, speak for the majority of high h/cappers out there, it would make a pleasant change if all you natural athletes, of single figures, could (however grudgingly) just say "well played" the next time a high h/capper had a good day at the office, instead of basically calling them cheats.
There endeth todays sermon..

It annoys me too.

I actually feel guilty when playing well, try and sound suprised and apologies for hitting a good shot sometimes.
Especially when playing low HCers.

I actually had a HC snob question why I was taking my driver on a particular hole. He also said a 20+ Hcer shouldnt even use a driver

Woah Jesse, hold your horses here for a second, totaly agree with your post up to a point , , where you have "all ye natural athletes off single handicaps " put SOME please , i play most weekends with two guys off 20, we have great banter & love to see each other playing well as much as playing well ourselves .. the OP was for society days & corporate days .. guys like Rooter mentioned .. so where as us single handicappers shouldnt label all high guys as bandits dont all label single guys as handicap snobs ..

Except for Bomber of course , he is totaly ..

I'd have politely pointed out that he may want to think again seeing as you don't go from 9 to 28 in 2 years. Unless he was bigger than you I suppose. I think the term bandit could very well be applied to him, and I am willing to bet he probably had played in the intervening 2 years anyway.

I used to play badminton to quite a decent level, packed up for 20 odd years and have recently started playing again. And surprisingly enough, whilst I am not as quick or fit as I used to be and have lost a few yards as they say, I can still hold my own. And I would not dream of entering myself in a tournament for beginners, which is effectively what he did.

@HK yeh he was a big lad! Lol but was more surprised that he did it and accepted what he knew was twice the handicap he should have been on. If I shot 50+ on an inflated handicap, I would not hand my card in, would be too embarrassed!! (Wouldn't be off a too high hcap anyway, but you get the point!)

Why does something thats meant a joke i imag wind you up?

I get called a bandit all the time, so what..

not sure you can call yourself a good ball striker off 20 + i wouldn't even call myself one;)

The problem isn't guys (and gals) with proper club handicaps - no matter how high they are. The problem is the low-lifes that don't have a handicap and have to suggest one.
"I'm not playing well so.......", or "haven't played for a couple of years....", "stick me off 28".

I would NEVER pay to enter anything like that.

As for bounce games, we play whatever it would be if it were a club comp, ie. singles = full, better ball = 3/4.

Handicap snobbery, and inverted handicap snobbery from high handicappers;

I don't care whether you play off scratch or 28, I'm more than happy to play golf with you. I'm a 55yr old athritic with a dodgy ticker... athlete, my.... I've been lucky enough to be low single figures for the thick end of 40yrs now and love golf, playing and having a craic with whoever I'm playing with.

There are handicap snobs out there at both ends of the spectrum. But please don't label me as one just because I'm lucky enough to be a low handicapper. As the GM northeast lads know, I will play with anyone.

That is a great attitude to have, however the point is in games where you have paid over the odds to play or just been lucky and been invited through work. You want as fair a chance as any to win some goodies! Its fundamental cheating which doesn't sit well with me.

I dont have a club handicap, however for a work or society game I would never ask for an inflated handicap (I track every game I play online so in reality my claimed handicap should be pretty accurate)

If i know you its a joke, if i don't its an insult and a tactic imo.
I don't call myself a good ball striker my, fc's do. Its been known for me to actually finish a round with the same ball i started with.
A rare thing round our place. If you agree to give me some pointers on me short game, perhaps i could do the same for you on your driving.:rofl:.
As far as the rest of you low cappers go, if you have never called a relative stranger at your club a bandit for having the audacity to make a good shot every now and then, i sinscerly apologise for tarring you with the same brush.
The rest of you:ears::ears:

Whats with all these people getting so serious? I dont know what makes me giggle more, the low handicappers getting annoyed at not winning on corporate golf days which are just a glorified botty kiss anyway or higher handicappers getting offended at being called a bandit

What happened to just turning up and trying to play best you can and having a laugh? :D

We play both ,no snobbery in the squad of guys i play in which is mainly made up of Cat1 players and single figure players with a few low teens and one at 20.
Everybody just goes out has a bit of banter and a few beers after it.

In a our roll up group, we play stableford off full handicap as we have a huge range of ability from single figure players to guys in the high 20's. Win and you get a two shot cut off your club handicap for the next three games. Come second and its a one shot cut for the same period. It is designed to make it harder for the same faces to win every time and spread the cash about a bit and seems to work although it is a bit of a nightmare trying to work out what everyone is off before we go out. Hawkeye is the roll up handicap guru and we leave it to him
