I apologise if this has been asked before.

How is a course par calculated on the day? For example our stableford comp par last weekend came in at 38 instead of 36. How are the extra 2 points for the par computed?

Thanks

It's not "course par" it's the Competition Scratch Score that is calculated, so what should a scratch player score given the conditions of the day.
In very simple terms the calculation is based on how many players in the various handicap categories achieve a score which is within their buffer zone, so the harder or easier the conditions the more it will increase or decrease. Stableford is based on net score versus par so this appears that the CSS on the day was 2 under par, ie if you played to your handicap you should score 38 points.

The standard scratch takes into account the difficulty of a course rather than just what level par for 18 holes is.

For example 2 courses could be par 72. Let’s say for argument they each had 18 par 4s to make up their course.

One course could be filled with holes of around 300 yards with wide open fairways and not many bunkers or other hazards. The other could be filled with holes of 400 yards, with tight fairways, trees and OB in play and bunker and water guarding most greens.

The standard scratch will take into account the level of difficulty and the shorter course could be rated at 68 or 69. The longer course may be 74 or 75.

The competition standard scratch does similar. If it is windy or wet (or both) and scoring is tough. Or if all the pins are tucked away, rough is up and tees are all back etc... the CSS May be higher than the SSS. Likewise a benign day with favourable conditions and set up will see the CSS reduce and so players may not get as big a cut if they shoot under their handicap.
