Could this be done?

I'm sure this could be organised as there are already loads of people arranging meets on a monthly/quarterly basis. The attraction of a GM backed final at a very good course would draw in the more serious forumers while the local more regional meets would attract high handicapers like myself who just want to meet up for a game. You could do it NW, NE, Yorks, Mids etcor break it down further into N,S,E,W Yorkshire etc.

Surely there is enough forum members in various regions to sort this out and get it going, backed by GM it may reduce green fee's and if anything its a chance to play at a new course for a knock with local players.

The attraction of a GM backed final at a very good course ......

I've emailed Mike to come on here and give us his thoughts. He's an "ideas man" if I ever met one...

I reckon Benross would be a good corporate sponsor of this event...... maybe free helicopter rides for anyone struggling to travel to regional qualifiers?

Isn't t best to start by listing all those players who are interested and where they are located. Based on this, divide into regions and canvas if everyone is happy with thedistance they woudl haev to travel for the preliminary rounds.

It would be good then to have semi final and final on teh same day (morning and afternoon) to make a day of it for people travelling some distance.

What about a Ryder cup North vs South style event.

Play it over 2 days - 1 round of foursomes / 1 round of 4BBB / 1 round of singles
12 man teams - some kind of qualification for each team.

Trophy to the winning team.

It would alienate too many people. You couldn't ask someone from Cornwall to play in the same team as someone in Berwick.

I think there is potential in this.
I like the idea of regional qualifiers.
I also like the idea of medal qualifiers, then a matchplay finals day.[how would this work].

Four qualifiers from each so 24 matchplay players.
We need 6 organisers in each region[I would do the southwest].
The organisers would get the course and collect entries, once date is arranged.
Yes it would take some arranging but he who dares.

Lets say 6 regions,top 4 go through

Just a thought you will need 32 or 16 qualifiers for straight knockout

Rounds of 32 - 16 - 8 - 4 - 2 etc

Also, Pokerjoke- I've totally hijacked your thread. 1000 apologies mate!!!

I'll calm the jets for a bit as others pile in with their own ideas, but should others wish me to run with this idea then let me know. I think sometimes it just takes someone to say "right, I've booked x, y and z courses on xxxxx date, who wants to pay their deposit for this right now".

Otherwise you have what DCB alluded to earlier which is a thread full of good ideas which all contradict each other and collectively achieve hee-haw.

No apologies mate.
As you said it needs someone to grab it by the horns and get it done.
Logistics is the issue here,Scotland is a long way from lands end.
The finals would have to be midlands.
Maybe if we could get 6 to organise the regionals,gm could help with a venue for the matchplay.

I think 8 region would work better towards a final, after all the micro regions are done, yo could have 4 from the south and 4 from the north 16 players in each, you've then got quarter finals and this would fit in nicely with a Saturday and Sunday quarters, semi and final format, the north winner then plays the south winner for overall winner.

This could be done as an annual event, not sure who would play, first come first served, I don't know, but possible I dare say.

For what it's worth, I reckon that having finals over two days would be prohibitive for a lot of people.

Keep it simple! Have a regional qualifier (stableford) on one day per region. Top xxx go through to the National Final which again is a one-round one day stableford.

I posted something similar previously, but the qualifiers were Order of merit stableford points based. The premise would be, we have local OOM's with prize money. The top two in each regional OOM go through to a finals weekend (they can use the money won at the local OOM - we paid out £150 to our winner). Play the finals as 8 teams of pairs, you could maybe do matchplay semis and finals all over one weekend, or 3 days of play. The OOM's could run March - August, finals in September/October, If one of the pair can't make it, the 3rd placed player goes. Simples.

I thnk you're right, while matchplay is an easy way of reducing the field, the logistics would be a nightmare, a stableford based competition would be much easier to organise.

I'm thinking of getting the list of people who would want to participate, doing a draw within regional area or micro region and having the match played on an agreed date, winners progress. It could still be a group meet for those who want to, with the comp running within the meet.

There was a Ryder Cup between England and Scotland a few times, not been played for a couple of years though, so Scotland are still the holders.

Poker- how would matchplay work on such a large scale on one day?

Lets say there were 32 finalists.
You could have 9 holes to get 16
9 holes to get 8
That's the morning done
9 to get 4
9 to get 2
18 or 9 final.
This could be in one day when the days are longer.
The 16 knocked out first could play 4 fourballs if they wanted to.
That's if we had 8 regions with the top 4 in each go through from the medal rounds.
Matchplay on finals day.
Would this work?
I was hoping you clever people would tell me.
If we could get 8 regions all playing on the same weekend, then a finals day im sure this
wouldn't take long to do.
Weve got all winter to do nowt

If you want to have some sort of final or play off on the day........

Perhaps a stableford qualifier in the morning. Then afternoon matchplay - 1st vs 2nd for champ 3rd vs 4th for third place etc.......down to the last place game.

Probaby need to limit fields to 24 or so to allow everyone a lunch and time to set match order to go back out

Clever idea!

Combines the desire for matchplay as well as having the finals done and dusted in one day.

This gets my vote.
