Could this be done?

Its a great idea but very hard to do due to all areas being different and people willing to organise.

For me it would need to be something like a regional team championship. Split the forum up into regions. Each region decides its own qualifying method to select their team to send to the final. This will depend on numbers, matchplay is very difficult to do imo with a lot.

Best 4 from each region go to the final. Stableford competition in the morning with the 2 teams with best 4 combined score going into the afternoon final matchplay style singles. Rest of teams playing off for league places in afternoon.

Winning region hosts the following years final.

I like this idea a lot.

If you want to have some sort of final or play off on the day........

Perhaps a stableford qualifier in the morning. Then afternoon matchplay - 1st vs 2nd for champ 3rd vs 4th for third place etc.......down to the last place game.

Probaby need to limit fields to 24 or so to allow everyone a lunch and time to set match order to go back out

Love this idea. Think you would need 16 small regional qualifiers with top 2 from each going through. If you only have 4 or even 8 regions there would be some huge travel distances. Assuming Scotland was one region, Ireland another and then England split into two all regions could have long journeys. Even splitting Scotland into 2 would still leave some facing long journeys. Could even make it 32 small regions and then match play playoffs between neighbouring regions to see who goes forward to finals day. Winner of region A v Runner Up of region B and vice versa.

32 finalists (8 x 4 balls) playing stableford in the morning and then matchplay in the afternoon.

Is it worth starting a new thread for those who would be interested to just express an interest and asking for it to be stickied, so we could judge numbers and region?

Mike has informed me that it's deadline day at GM Towers and he'll try his best to look over this thread when things get less hectic.

I would propose that people just keep chucking in their ideas of how they would like it done and wait for the word and advice from GM before we finalise ideas.

Might also be best that GM put someone in charge of this event or we'll have 1000 cooks spoiling a potentially lovely broth.

You could always make the whole thing a bit easier by doing it in 3 stages.

Stage 1. Local regional qualifiers - East SCO, West SCO, N IRE, EIRE, NW, NE, East MIDS, West MIDS, SW,SE, North Wales, South Wales. - (or any regional splits as required.)

Stage 2. Large regional Final - Winners of each region play winners of neighbouring region - East SCO vs West SCO, N IRE vs EIRE, NW vs NE, East MIDS vs West MIDS, SW vs SE, South Wales vs North Wales

Stage 3. Finals day at a central venue - 18 holes of Stableford or Medal to be followed by 18 holes of Matchplay for the top 2. The 4 others could play 18 holes of Stableford or Medal to finalise the placings (scores form the morning to be counted as well.)

Everyone who enters pays a tenner. This could be used to pay the travel/Hotel costs for all the Finalists (which should make it easier for our Irish and Scottish friends to attend).

I see what you mean with GM involvement and the like but we cant expect them to make up a competition from all this rubble can we? I think between us all we need to come up with an idea in principle and let them see what they think about it and what they think could be done better etc?

I was thinking a simple matchplay to see who is the forum king!!!

I play Murphthemog and knock him out... then proceed to beat Pieman, Smiffy and TheRod and voila! I'm the SouthEast champ... I then beat the SouthWest champ (we meet at a mutual course half way) and then I beat Region3 the Midlands champ before playing at Lytham (paid for with your £10 entries) and beating the Scottish or NW champ... bingo!!! I'm the champ!!!

Right ...now I've won that what's the next comp? :p

(I also thought that those who get drawn to play 'away' will be paying their petrol to get there and back so whomever gets drawn with the advantage of a 'home' game should pay the members guest fee on behalf of their 'traveling and disadvantaged' opponent)

As an alternative as GM are working with HDID on the Titleist OOM what if they could somehow produce a separate ranking for Forumers that could be used to whittle down to a Forum top 16 and they qualified for an end of season matchplay weekend with the winner crowned forum champion? That way there's only the logistics for the final event

That would depend how the ranking was made up. If its off official club competitions then that would rule a large number of nomad golfers out. Also that ranking would be produced by games not played with any other forummers in most cases which wouldn't be as good as if the finalists were decided by forummers playing against each directly be it matchplay, stableford etc.

HDID is not nearly as ubiquitous as those who use it seem to believe - lots of folks would be excluded if it went down this route.

Totally get that just trying to think of a way we could structure it so the only additional element is finals day...

How about this as an alternative. I've been thinking this year that some planning of forum meets to coincide with magazine deadlines would be good. What if we devised an OOM similar to what Birchy has done this year at a number of predetermined meets? I'm happy to collate all the results as I'd doing write ups on most of them anyway.

The top 16 ranked golfers then qualify for the matchplay finals? I just think if we are trying to arrange extra stuff it won't happen but if we use existing meets with some parameters it could actually work really well

LOL..... perhaps the entry fee 'funds' could be applied at 'regional level' if there's enough in the pot.

Anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to see who is the champ, not who is the best at stableford over 9 holes, the best matchplay over 9 holes (or both) or the best team, or the best from a qualification event, or 'forum meet' of 12,16,24,or 48 people as that would be just who was the best on the day rather than who beat 10 opponents over the course of the entire 2014 season to get to the final. If it's a 'one day' forum meet we're after then it's not exactly going to be the same thing.

We could just say ChrisD is the champ as he won at West Hill where there were more forumers present than any other meet in forum history, there you go... done!

Whatever is the group concensus (basically whoever steps up to the plate and decides to actually organise something) will choose how it's all to be done. Right now I'm just writing my thoughts/opinion.
