We are considering changing to a drawn competitions format for our Saturday comps. In our area the norm seems to be to play in regular groups. Would be interested to hear any views on the subject as well as get a feel for how popular or unpopular this idea is across a broader cross section.

On one hand it could be good. It's always harder to play with strangers and you get to meet new people.

However golf is mainly about enjoying yourself and I for one would feel a bit pissed off if I couldn't play in competitions with my friends.

we have no drawn comps other than club champ all other are booked online through thr BRS system works well IMO as you can choose regular partners but also any singles or new members get chance to slot in and get a game.
bookings are opened 3 weeks prior to the comp and stay live until 2 hours before a tee time.
Only issue i have with it is the easy at which you can cancel your slot.

We have very few drawn comps. Booking is via HDID so peopel tend to play in their usual groups, which seems fine to me as we just play for fun. Not too difficult for a newbie to find a slot or to fit in at the last minute. Nice to be able to play with your mates at a time that suits you. Wouldn't drawn comps reduce the options for that?

The Midweek Comps at APGC are all "roll-up". Everyone tends to play in the same groups. It works ok.
The weekend comps are about half'n'half, I don't play them so can'really comment on them.
My last club drew all comps but it was such a small Comp playing membership that you were almost guarantee that you'd have played with everyone in your group many times.

Only two comps that are drawn at mine.

I think having non-drawn comps makes it hard for new members to meet people. Im not the most outgoing golfer so sometimes struggle on a Saturday to get a game.

All our comps are in your own groups and I agree that it can suit established members as you can always play with your mates. What is does do is make it harder for new members to integrate as we have comps most weekends and it can thus be hard to meet people. We also have no roll ups to counteract this (I suspect because there are comps most weekends).

In an ideal world we would have half and half between drawn and own groups or a roll up on Saturday and a comp on Sunday. This should make it easier for everyone to have a game and meet more people.

We get a good turn out most weeks for our comps with usually around 30-50 competitors.

The names are always drawn but if you can request to be paired together when you add you names to the list. More often than not medal play goes out in handicap order lowest first but other comps tend to be random.

The system works because they are very flexible. If you get drawn out last and want to have an earlier slot (or vice versa) they will normally always accomodate you.

All of ours are drawn - even the roll up you put your name on a card and it goes into the hat. Good news for me as I didn't know anyone when I joined. I think the mid-week medal next year will be slightly different in that you can turn up anytime and play with whoever you want.

Our Saturday medals are drawn but the optional Wednesday and Sunday medals are roll ups and you can play with whom you like, as long as there is no more than three of you.

The vast majority of our comps are not drawn which I like as it's nice to play with people you know. Saying that, I have no problem with drawn comps and I like the challenge that comes with playing with people you've not met before. I can see why people think they are necessary, especially from the perspective of someone joining a club where they don't know anyone. Luckily we have an informal Wednesday night roll up which is drawn and I joined in with that as soon as I could and have met some top guys as a result of that, including my regular playing partners now. I think it's important for clubs to have both types as meeting new people is an important part of the game to me, as is enjoying it.

Ours are never drawn,we have not got enough players.
In fact its getting worse.
11 players in the comp last saturday

I played in a comp last year, a stableford, I was first and my playing partner was second, there was only 2 of us in the bleedin thing as the weather was so bad, I won with 24 points ha ha

Mostly drawn for us but with a couple of stable fords that you can choose.

Drawn for us consists of choosing a time slo (8-9, 9-10 etc) then you get drawn other similar handicaps in that area.

I like the drawn aspect as you get to meet many more players (been there 3 years but there are loads I haven't played with and I welcome the opportunity to meet and play with different players). I don't like the drawn by handicap though. For one it creates little groups of people, you end up paying with people over and over again, also create an elite little group of low handicappers (apparently it was this group of low handicappers that requested this type of draw). Personally I welcome any handicap group playing with me, and cant understand the logic of the lows that say it ruins their game.

Only two comps that are drawn at mine.

I think having non-drawn comps makes it hard for new members to meet people. Im not the most outgoing golfer so sometimes struggle on a Saturday to get a game.

I've had to add myself onto other groups for competitions and in doing so have met a lot of people at my club. But the benefit was speaking to the pro who put me with people that were supportive and friendly. There are some people at my club that wouldn't want to be drawn with a high h'cap.

For me it's a social game. I've had the chance to meet loads of new people but at the end of the day I generally have most fun playing with specific people at my club.

We only have drawn comps in our matchplay pairs and singles and on the captains prize comp we play over 2 comps with everybody going off in leaderboard order for the 3rd and final round shotgun start

I'd like a few drawn comps as it helps playing with other lads instead of the same lads week in week out.

Bit of a hybrid for us.

You don't pre-book groups, just pitch up for the comp and the groups are arranged then.

I like it, I know most of the people at my place anyway so it's nice to get to play with them all and catch up/have a bit of a laugh with them all at different times.
