At the end of September I was laid off with no prior indication which has left me a little up the creek with no paddle. Unfortunately no notice was given and as I was self employed it was pretty much , can't keep you on you go at the end of the week, so back home updated the cv and I estimate I've applied for around 100 jobs in under 3 weeks with not even sn interview.

Now I know unemployment is it its highest, which is leading me to believe there is something on my cv that employers are not jumping for, wondering if anyone here is in recruitment would they be open to give me some constructive feed back

Frustrated socks!

The only way you have to impress a potential employer is by the written word.
Do you check through your applications to make sure there are no errors?

I know this place is different but I counted at least 9 mistakes in your post and I'm just wondering if that may be a factor?

Cv is correctly spelt and punctuated as it should be, I use the iPad when messing around on here, which I can be prone for getting ahead of myself with the spelling.... Or just a tad careless

It may be worth getting someone to check it in case you have missed something.
Spell cheque doesn't always pick up things that are wrong. ;)

Ah bob I'm right there with ya on this one, that was the very reason it was sent to someone with a higher education than me to proof read to ensure this very thing had not happened ;)

I think the main issue is from 98-05 I run one business, then from 05-jan this year I ran another. I'm not sure if employers see this a possible down side.....

Hi oddsocks, sorry to hear that.

If you want to PM me I'll be happy to look over your cv and give any pointers. 100 applications and no interviews might be down to other factors such as the roles you are applying for, types of organisations etc even down to the email address you send it from (I received one from mentalmikey@*******.com which doesn't inspire confidence)

I was very aware that a email address can make some difference, and I can assure you it is not coming from happytohack@hotmail

Not in recruitment but when asked for advice on CVs I say - think carefully about what you actually did when in any role/job. Try to see past the job title to wheedle out the things you did; were responsible for, and what you actually achieved/delivered. Often lots of good stuff is omitted as you just subconsciously lump it under 'just doing the job' - assuming that anyone reading the CV will somehow understand what your job involved.

Oddsocks - I did IT recruitment for 3 years, feel free to PM if you would like a review of your CV.

Few things to consider - most recruitment agencies recieved thousands of CVs per day, on average your CV will be skim-red anything from 10-60secs.

A simple test of your CV effectiveness is to give your CV to someone who doesnt know you and give them 60 secs to review it. Then ask them to tell you what they learned in 60 secs.

Thanks to all that posted and also to the three guys that reviewed and gave feedback, there seemed to be a few common areas of improvement so hopefully a reword and format tonight should see some increase in response.

Thanks again guys, it was very appreciated

your welcome, I know what it's like being in-between jobs:(

Happy to critique the finished article as well and I'll email pointers on where to look plus some pro-active approaches that have worked well over the years if you want.

Hi OS, not an expert in the CV but i have employed and interviewed staff and i work in sales and marketing ( senior level )

Yes the CV is important but firstly you need to be able to sell yourself as a person, something that many people are scared to do.

Its amazing how many people who do not follow up the CV after posting or visit companies in person to see if they are looking

When you get the interview its again amazing how many people fail to actually ask for the job

Its a tough world and as i heard today many employers are turning down cv's if the applicant is over qualified ( will not stay etc )

Please tell us what you are qualified in and the sort of job you are looking for and what qualities you have etc etc

GL mate

I was made redundant at the end of August and I was all keen and enthusiastic at first, but now I'm struggling like anything to keep plugging away.

I've had my CV looked at and 'improved' twice, I apply for at least 3 jobs a day, and write a specific letter for each one, and then I try and chase up the recruitment agencies when they say they are going to put you forward for anything. (Which is a blimmin tough, coz 90% of them don't return calls - which is even more depressing...)

One guy I got through to said he already had over 200 applications for one post, and there were still 3 days to go before the shut-off date.

Bloody nightmare

I hope you get yourself sorted.

:(

I think one of the problems may be you are applying or jobs which only ask for a cv. You could be the best applicant but if your 75th of a pile of 75 and there are 5 decent applicants in the first 25 I'm assuming the manager won't go through all of them!

Applications will put the majority of chancers off.

What kind of jobs are you looking for?

Mainly area/field sales or account managers, in my view the same job with a different title. All have asked for cv plus cover letter.

Lucky enough a few members have all given me great feedback and I'm hoping the cv is gong to now get through the barriers, plus on the positive side I have two interviews next week
