Another slow play rant!

crafty.

for our big comps we are asked to put our start and finish times, so the main culprits can't hide;)

That has no bearing though on how fast or slow you are if for example you've lost balls, spent five minutes looking for them, let people through etc etc

it does it the group in front of them finishes 20 min before and the whole field is right behind at 5 min intervals.

etiquette states you should keep pace with the group in front, not in front of the group behind

Slow play is the single biggest issue in golf and the problem still lies in the fact that these bigger events never seemed to be marshalled properly or at all to ensure a consistent pace of play but more importantly and more worryingly, people simply won't be educated and changed their ways. We all know the etiquette and pace of play requirements but far too many like those in the OP think the problem is with someone else and refuse to take responsibility for their own actions. I cannot see anyway that is going to change in the short, medium or long term

I rather spend 5hrs on a golf course playing the game, then be at work for 5 seconds. Those who get het up about slow play on the course have lost it, good job a lot of you aren't good enough to play the tours then!

However there is life outside of golf.. Im lucky to be able to get out as much as I do and 4 hours is the tops it should be for a round

I stopped playing weekends because 5 hours was just too much

like to be at a course hour before to make sure I am in place then its polite to stay for 1 drink afters

hour each way drive at times

that's a 9 hour day....

One problem I see at my club is higher handicappers playing off the middle or back tees when their ability should put them on the yellows...

Just because you're a member doesn't mean you are good enough to play off the whites..!

Slope system has its benefits

Are you suggesting that above a certain handicap you can't play in any competitions? The whites are used at ours

Not at all... although some competitions at our place it wouldn't be great to enter with a high handicap.

My post was more related to general play, but can also apply to some comps

How would slope affect people playing off the tees they want to? Either make them comps only (bad practice imo) or strongly suggest a hcp range to play there socially if its a big problem.

So the guys that want to take all the time in the world to play can go at the back and not hold the field up

And using the tour as a beacon isn't the smartest as they have a big issue with slow play that all the governing bodies are looking to tackle over the coming year.

My only experience with the slope system is in Spain, where I've played a few medals and stablefords... each player selects the tee they want to play from and accepts the number of shots you get from that tee based on your handicap... means the higher handicappers generally play from shorter tees making the course more playable and in my experience in Spain, keeps pace of play up...

Some comps should however be played from specific tees, such as club champs etc

Why can't I use the Tour as a beacon. It starts at the top!! You moan about PSR's creeping into the amateur game cos they see it on tv by the pros as a cause for slow play, yet nothing is done about it by the governing bodies why they take sooooo long in deciding what shot to play! Just watch Michelson and Bones!!! Tedious!

In response to my comment about I'd rather be 5 hrs, I didn't say it was acceptable! But I'm not going to moan about it as I'd rather be on the course then be at work, what's wrong with that! Or have you taken it as a 'I prefer to take my time when I'm playing' comment?!!
I can't CONTROL what's happening 2-3 groups ahead if they are taking their time and not allowing groups behind to play through. I can only control what I'm doing and in my group. You have varying degrees of ability in the amateur game unlike the Pro's who are far superior to us, yet they take an eternity to play a round. So if the governing bodies are saying 'play ready golf' in the amateur game, why hasn't it been introduced on the tours by now! Is there any wonder the commentators gab on so much and talk nonsense at times just to fill in the length of gaps between shots......

If it's a slow round, accept it, and if the company's good then you've got longer to enjoy it, then to be going on about what's going on ahead......

No they are not... but I know a bloke who makes them so! (Gosh, iron cover users are jolly sensitive..... the lady doth protest too much? )
What's sad is you resorting to personal insults, all my comments have been made with a smile or wink, sad you've lost your sense of humour. ⚽️👜

Very true.
I recall being in the fourth match of a 2BBB competition.
Played the 1st 6 holes in just over an hour.
On the 7th the first match lost a ball and immediately waved 2nd match through. [Slight delay]
First match then loses a ball behind the green and waves 3rd match through. [Bigger delay]
3rd match then loses a ball from the tee and waves 4th match [us] through.
Meanwhile 1st match lose two balls on 8th hole.
Our match plays through the all three matches in two holes.

We find ourselves three clear holes behind the players in front and on the receiving end of some fierce glares from the eight golfers waiting on each tee back to the 2nd hole.

i take it you didn't bother to read my reply. its not meant to catch the people who play at a reasonable pace, but shows up the slowcoaches. The people holding you the field in your example, will be the ones that stick out if the time started was shown on the card

When I'm out playing a round, I don't care how long it takes, why worry about it and let it get to you, so what the OP had taken a day off work and spent 5hrs on the golf course, the other option would've not doubt being working, I know where I'd rather be.

A couple of years ago I did the 'New Golf Thinking' thing through GM, prior to that day slow play would get to me, my fellow players whining about slow play would get to me, it would ruin my game, to the point where I honestly thought about giving up, selling my gear and doing something else, but the NGT made me think a different way and now I couldn't give a toss if the group in front are glacial slow.

It's blatantly obvious that slow play gets to the OP, so much so he needed to write about it, more than likely still foaming as it was written.

It's a cliché but life's to short to worry about the little things, to get all stressed about things for which you have no control.
