Yet another slow play thread ...

There's no rule or no 'score' when you should just pick up, but guys out there clinging onto a score that is double figures over net Par, just so that they don't NR serves no purpose.

As others have said, you know when a round has gone. It makes sense to not hold up play taking ages to hole out when your card is already wrecked.

Clearly they are still entitled to do it - but if players in general took a more relaxed view about NRing then play generally could speed up, quite a bit at some clubs.
That’s an education point of view I understand.
Who says they are holding up play or if the card is wrecked, again you’ve took it to extremes to support your point of view.
Have you lobbied to ensure your Club introduces the new local rule for maximum score comps? Ideal if you have such a problem with people not picking up and nr’ing

Don't walk in. That would be disrespectful to your playing partners and the CSS.
Carry on, enjoy your round, hole out and record your score on other holes. You can still save your handicap via Stableford. But there comes a time in a bad round, when you won't be able to rescue it from a strokeplay point of view. and if you get into trouble, then rather than spend ages looking for a ball, or play multiple provisionals, or go back to the tee... just pick up and move on.

You aren't cheating anyone or doing anything dishonest. arguably staying out there and taking ages to play the round and slowing up your playing partners, is worse.

Also - never seen the rule 'we don't pay out on 2's if you NR'. That is a fairly silly rule and no doubt clubs like that will struggle with slow play if the club are encouraging that kind of culture.

Obviously if people want to return a score, then they have to finish every hole - but really there should not be a stigma attached to people who NR and just get on with their day. Assuming they aren't doing it to manage their handicap.
One of the new rules will solve some of this, Lost ball, no need for a provisional. SD penalty and drop, no hold ups, 3 mins search bingo;)

A friend of mine won the monthly medal with a score of 10 on the 11th hole a couple of months ago. It was a par 5 but still 5 over.

I believe this is only an option for a local rule to be put in place and it is recommended that it is not for big competitions.

Not sure what you mean by big competitions - but it's use isn't permitted in any competition, or round, that is qualifying for handicapping.

So it solves nothing 😀

I thought they had the phrase ‘not intended for elite events’.

I guess if clubs really wanted to speed up where OB was a proble, they could red stake it and it would be a lateral water hazard.

They did. However Congu decided that they know better than the R&A and USGA and, without any evidence, have effectively banned it in all clubs under their (mis) control.

At my club, a medal round rarely takes more than four hours and we only get a handful at most in the entire field that will NR. From a personal perspective I would usually put a score in regardless of whether the buffer has long gone or not. As long as a player is hitting a provisional and taking minimum time to look for balls in areas where there is little chance of finding it let alone moving it then play moves along and everyone can enjoy their own game. I think ultimately its a personal choice and as long as the course flows I don't have a problem

Is the "lateral water hazard" not getting done away with, to become hazard areas where you can now ground your club as well???

Or am I getting confused and just making that up???

I'm still on summer time o_O. For some reason I assumed slow play was more likely at Arcot than Newbiggin. That's what assuming does for you :D
I find that any round over 3.5 hours at Arcot in the Saturday comps will get people mentioning slow play. It's like everyone wants to race round as quick as they can, some of the older guys are absolutely rapid. 200 yards down the middle with every shot and will tee off as soon as you are 5 yards out of range.

Thought I'd bring this thread back to life after today's round. Bare with me this could be long..

Played in a roll up stableford today but the tee was reserved for ladies between 830 and 10am today. So roll up agreed an 11am start give the ladies chance to play and not feel hurried by us teeing off immediately after them. The last group 4 ball was going off as I got to the club at 950am. Got my draw for my 3 ball for the day was in first group out, had a warm up on range, a chip and a putt and arrived at the tee at 11am ready to go, nobody had gone out between us and the ladies so they had a good 1hr and 10min head start on us.

We werent playing overly fast but were playing ready golf. By the time we were walking down the 5th fairway we could see the last ladies group hitting their 2nd shots in the 6th hole. Fast forward to the 9th we had to wait in the fairway for them to play the 9th green. From there on until the 12th we waited an absolute age on every shot with bags being left wrong side of greens etc and they then split from a 4 ball to a 2 ball for last 6 holes which was a bit odd as we thought they were playing a comp.

More waiting on each shot until the 16th tee where it can be a a bit of a blind shot if you take on the dog leg so we waited until they reached the green which could just make out through the trees, I hit probably the best shot I hit all day straight over the dog leg. We walked up to our balls only to find they were still on the green marking their cards and the pair marched down the fairway to have a go at me for nearly killing them with my drive queue lots of confusion as my ball was 70yards short of the front edge of the green which they were on when we teed off, I apologised for any issue caused but did ask "where were you when my ball landed".? The reply was we were on the green but your ball has landed far to close and could have harmed us, you've been rushing round forcing us to play quicker all day you need to learn the etiquette of the game and slow down"

I fail to see how a ball 70yards short of them was any danger considering they were putting out and why march down the fairway to have a pop when we not once tried to push them and it was them who had lost 4 holes in their group in front causing us to catch them up even though they had over an hours head start...

Fortunately for me my group consisted of last years captain who still on the committee and confirmed I had done nothing wrong nor had our group and he took the 2 ladies to one side whilst we played our approach shots and sorted the issue.

Unfortunately with a lot of golfers not just Ladies this is a major problem.
Their lack of understanding how the game flows is just annoying and often leads to confrontation.
Marking cards on greens , and other things while players are standing on the fairways waiting just annoyes people ,
To make things worse they think they are the ones wronged as in your example.
Clubs don’t know what to do imo. Everything they try fails as people are selfish!!

Just so happened in this instance was ladies, could have been anyone.

It's was the nearly killed them comment that got me as the ball wasn't anywhere near, to me that was an excuse to turn it on us for blame.

I 100% agree with you thsg clubs have no idea what to do to combat it, people are selfish and it doesn't matter what clubs try to do it will always be a growing issue in the game and never the fault of the slow player

Well this might come to a head if your committee pp has any sway .
But I find committees try to please everyone but actually please nobody.
We have issues like this but nothing we do is working short of naming and shaming I can’t see an answer.
But accusing you of dangerous play is bang out of order and could lead to arguments.
